Martin Wallström was born in Uddevalla in 1983 and was in front of a camera before turning fifteen. He debuted in the feature film Hela härligheten in 1998. There were no grand ceremonies or immediate artistic epiphany. He simply began working in an industry that was looking for Nordic faces with a strange mix of coldness and vulnerability.
And it worked.
He trained at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg between 2004 and 2008. During those years of study he balanced classes with minor roles in Swedish TV productions such as Wallander. But recognition in his home country didn't come from a police drama but from the comedy Simple Simon in 2010. In this film he played Sam, the brother of a young man with Asperger's syndrome.
The film was selected to represent Sweden at the Oscars. Wallström brought a natural quality that caught the attention of international casting directors. His ability to convey contained tension without saying a single word became his greatest asset.
The casting for Mr. Robot in 2015 changed his career forever. Wallström sent in a tape he recorded himself for the role of Tyrell Wellick and won over Sam Esmail without any prior meetings. He played a psychotic executive who spoke Swedish with his wife and beat homeless people to release tension.
He made a supporting character feel like a constant threat over four seasons. But the actor preferred to keep a careful distance from Hollywood fame. He never moved to Los Angeles for good, because he preferred the calm of Stockholm.
Swedish television has always been his safe haven.
In 2020 he starred in the series Partisan and won the award for best series at the Canneseries festival. Here he played Johnny, an undercover agent in a farming community with cult-like overtones. It was a necessary change of pace after years tied to Wellick's suit and tie.
He took part in The Head during 2022, an international production shot largely in Tenerife and Madrid. He shared the bill with John Lynch and Hovik Keuchkerian in a claustrophobic thriller set in Antarctica. At this stage of his career he began prioritizing projects where language was not a barrier to the storytelling.
In 2022 he played Edvard Munch in the film Hilma, directed by Lasse Hallström. That same year he appeared in The Playlist, the miniseries about the birth of Spotify in which he played Per Sundin. He is an actor who prefers projects with a solid technical structure over empty big-budget blockbusters.
Filming of his part in the series The 1% was completed in 2024 under a strict confidentiality agreement.
During 2024 he worked on the action series Sthlm Blackout. It is a spy comedy that moves away from the darkness of his earlier work. Wallström turned down two lead roles in American network series in 2017 to shoot independent film in his home country.
