Gustaf Hammarsten wasn't chasing global fame when he took on the submissive assistant role of a fictional Austrian model. In 2009, the release of Brüno thrust him into a level of public exposure few Swedish actors of his generation had experienced. That Sacha Baron Cohen film demanded an extraordinary amount of psychological endurance.
But his career didn't begin in the Hollywood offices. In Stockholm, he studied acting at the National Academy of Dramatic Art and honed his craft in classical theater before making the leap to the screen.
It was an absolutely risky bet.
In 2000, his name began to rise sharply thanks to Together. Under Lukas Moodysson's direction, he played Göran, the center of a hippie commune in the 1970s. The role required him to master emotional restraint, which would become his greatest professional tool.
Hammarsten handles silence better than many of his co-stars. His ability to convey discomfort earned him a role alongside David Fincher in the American version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2011. In that production he played the young Harald Vanger and proved that his screen presence fit perfectly within high-budget Nordic suspense.
Unlike other actors who move to Los Angeles at the first hint of success, Hammarsten kept his base in Sweden. He combined local projects with appearances in major television series. In 2016, he appeared in Midnight Sun, a French-Swedish co-production that explored racial tensions in the north of the country.
Not everything was awkward humor.
In 2021, director M. Night Shyamalan cast him in Old. In this psychological horror film, he played a psychologist facing accelerated aging on a remote beach. The movie grossed more than $90 million worldwide and returned Hammarsten to the front lines of mainstream English-language cinema.
But the actor always returns to his roots. In 2023, he reprised the role that made him famous two decades earlier in the sequel Tillsammans 99. Moodysson reunited the original cast to explore what had become of those idealists after so many years.
Scandinavian cinema never let go of him.
His career rests on a restraint that never goes out of style. In 2023, he also appeared in The Abyss, a Swedish blockbuster about a mine collapse in Kiruna, where he played Olle. As a result, his schedule stays full of projects that avoid easy typecasting.
The production of Tillsammans 99 had a budget of 25 million Swedish kronor and was shot mainly in the Västra Götaland region.
