Golshifteh Farahani can't go back home. Her passport was confiscated at Tehran airport in 2008 after she took part in a Hollywood production. That incident with the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance ended in forced exile in Paris, which changed her career forever.

She made her debut at age fourteen in The Pear Tree. She won the Best Actress award at the Fajr Film Festival, and Iranian audiences embraced her as one of their most recognizable faces. Her training as a classical pianist shaped the unhurried rhythm she keeps in front of the camera.

In 2008, she shot Body of Lies alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. She was the first Iranian actress to work on a major American production since the 1979 Revolution. Authorities in her country did not forgive her for appearing on screen without a hijab.

Reinventing herself in French exile

France welcomed her when Iranian cinema closed its doors on her. In 2009, she starred in About Elly, Asghar Farhadi's film that explored the tensions of the middle class in her homeland. But her true artistic breakthrough came with The Patience Stone in 2012.

She played a woman who confesses her secrets to her husband, who is in a coma. That performance broke the taboo around female desire in the Middle East and earned her a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actress. Jean-Claude Carrière's screenplay demanded a raw honesty that Farahani delivered without holding back.

And the gamble paid off.

Because her career didn't stop at social drama. In 2014, she took part in Exodus: Gods and Kings under Ridley Scott's direction. That blockbuster taught her how the major studios operate, while she still lived in a small apartment in Paris's 10 district.

The leap into action and auteur cinema

Jim Jarmusch cast her in Paterson in 2016 as co-star. Her role as Laura, a creative and optimistic woman, contrasted with the restraint of Adam Driver. The director was looking for a specific energy that only she could bring to the everyday story of a bus driver.

She rarely watches her own films once they're finished.

She balances European auteur cinema with big-budget streaming projects. In 2020, she played Nik Khan in Extraction, a mercenary who breaks the mold of the passive supporting character. She reprised the same role in the sequel Extraction 2, released in 2023.

She has turned down roles that perpetuated biased views of Muslim women in mainstream cinema, even as she continues to push herself physically in demanding films. She prefers to work on projects that challenge the logic of geopolitical blocs.

The Weight of Identity on Set

In 2022, she worked under Arnaud Desplechin in Ismael's Ghosts. The film competed in the official selection at Cannes and explored the visceral hatred between two brothers. Farahani plays the wife who tries to mediate in a family conflict that seems to have no end.

The shoot was a logistical challenge.

Because her presence on set always carries an implicit political weight. In 2024, she premiered Reading Lolita in Tehran, an adaptation of Azar Nafisi's memoir shot in Italy. The production recreated Tehran in the late 1970s to portray the intellectual resistance of a group of women against oppression.

The production of this film required a reinforced security team during the weeks of outdoor filming. The international distribution contract for the film was closed for 4.5 million euros before its first public screening.
