Olga Kurylenko wasn't looking for movies. She was thirteen when a talent scout stopped her in the Moscow metro while she waited for the train with her mother. At that point the young girl was only thinking about the financial survival of a humble family in post-Soviet Ukraine.
Modeling was the ticket out.
At sixteen, she landed in Paris without speaking a word of French. She learned the language in record time and began appearing on covers for Europe's most important fashion magazines. But the runways felt too small for her far too soon.
Her first real chance in front of a movie camera came with L’Annulaire in 2005. It was a small production that wasn't chasing big box office numbers, but it helped casting directors notice a magnetism that went beyond her looks.
In 2007, she took part in the film adaptation of the video game Hitman. American studios then recognized her ability to carry the weight of a major action production.
No one expected what would come a year later.
In 2008, she played Camille Montes in Quantum of Solace. She was the first Bond woman who doesn't sleep with agent 007 at any point in the film. That technical detail changed the saga's usual dynamic and gave her a character of her own as a revenge-driven figure.
Daniel Craig praised her physical endurance during the weeks of filming in the Atacama Desert. And it's true: Kurylenko performed much of her own stunt work without relying on stunt doubles.
Many names sink after appearing in a franchise of that caliber. She decided to radically diversify her bets. In 2012 she worked under Terrence Malick on To the Wonder. It was an experimental shoot without a closed script, where improvisation and silence took precedence over dialogue.
She shared the screen with Tom Cruise in 2013 for the science fiction film Oblivion. The movie grossed more than $286 million worldwide. Even so, Kurylenko kept seeking independent projects in Europe to avoid being typecast in commercial films.
Speaks Russian, French, English and Spanish fluently.
In 2017, she showed her gift for dark comedy in the political satire The Death of Stalin. She played pianist Maria Yudina under the direction of Armando Iannucci. It was a dry change of register that worked thanks to her training in European cinema.
In 2021, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Widow. Her character stayed hidden under armor for nearly the entire runtime.

Her role as Taskmaster is confirmed to continue in the production of Thunderbolts for 2025. Filming on this Marvel Studios installment had a base budget of $200 million before entering post-production.
