Danny Huston was born in Rome in 1962, with film in his blood. Being the son of John Huston and half-brother of Anjelica Huston shaped his first steps in the industry. Before acting, he tried directing. In 1988 he released Mr. North, but the result was an obvious box office failure that nearly ended his aspirations.
The camera was waiting for him on the other side.
During the nineties he moved on the fringes of Hollywood with minor roles. But in 2000 everything changed thanks to a digital camera and a script inspired by Tolstoy. Shooting Ivans Xtc cost less than half a million dollars and was filmed in a home-video format. Huston played a talent agent in full self-destruct mode, and international critics were won over by his raw intensity.
And the gamble paid off.
That job allowed him to shake off the “son of” label and begin building an identity of his own. His deep, gravelly voice and imposing physical presence caught the attention of casting directors. In 2003 he took part in 21 Grams under the direction of Alejandro González Iñárritu. That shoot allowed him to share the screen with Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro.
Hollywood found in Huston the perfect mold for the elegant antagonist. In 2005 he played Sandy Woodrow in The Constant Gardener. His performance earned him the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor that same year. He was not after the audience's sympathy but the truth of characters who operate in the gray areas of morality.
His look let him move between genres without apparent effort. In 2006 he shot Children of Men with Alfonso Cuarón, and in 2007 he transformed into a vampire leader for 30 Days of Night. Superhero blockbusters also came knocking. In 2009 he played William Stryker in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and in 2017 he played General Ludendorff in Wonder Woman.
The family name stopped being a burden.
But his interest in independent film never faded completely. He alternated 150 million dollar productions with experimental or author-driven projects. Because Huston sees the craft as a technical discipline where the size of the set is secondary. In 2012 he joined the series Magic City, playing the mobster Ben Diamond.
Television gave him a second professional life with corrupt, power-driven characters. In 2018 he joined the cast of Yellowstone to bring Dan Jenkins to life. He played a real estate developer who clashes head-on with the Dutton clan in Montana. His run on the show lasted two seasons and solidified his status in the American market.
In 2019 he appeared in Succession as Jamie Laird. His character was a high-level financial advisor trying to keep the Roy family empire afloat. The ease with which Huston handles technical dialogue and clashes of ego is one of his most distinctive traits. So his presence in corporate dramas became a regular thing.
In 2024 he took part in The Crow under the direction of Rupert Sanders. That same year he also joined the cast of Horizon: An American Saga. Filming of this western epic directed by Kevin Costner took place in the natural landscapes of Utah. Production of the saga's second installment was scheduled for late 2024.
