Scarlett Johansson started working when most kids still don't know what they want to be when they grow up. In 1994, she made her debut in the comedy North, and from the first minute it was clear her range was anything but typical. She was nine years old but spoke with a depth that unsettled producers of the time.
Many casting directors turned her down early on because they wanted sweeter, more childlike voices. But that natural edge is what caught the attention of Robert Redford for The Horse Whisperer in 1998. That shoot in Montana brought her first major paycheck and pulled her out of the generic child actress circuit.
And the gamble paid off.
Before turning twenty, she had already filmed Ghost World and was preparing for the project that would define her career as an adult. In 2003, she premiered Lost in Translation under the direction of Sofia Coppola. The film was shot in just 27 days in Tokyo on a budget of four million dollars.
The film was a massive box office success and got her out of auditions for supporting roles. Johansson quickly understood that her look could be a trap if she didn't choose her directors carefully. During that period, she worked with Woody Allen on Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, avoiding long-term contracts with the major studios.
Her entry into superhero movies came in 2010 with Iron Man 2. She signed a long contract that required her to appear in nine Marvel franchise films over more than a decade. But her relationship with the major studios was not always smooth.
In 2021, she filed a lawsuit against Disney over the digital release of Black Widow. The dispute centered on the box office percentages the actress lost when the film went straight to television. The case ended with a settlement payment that exceeded 40 million dollars, according to industry sources.
It was a bold statement.
Johansson has always preferred to alternate seven-figure paychecks with smaller, more personal projects. In 2019, she received two Oscar nominations in the same year for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. It's a milestone only about a dozen performers have achieved in the history of the awards.
That duality allowed her to keep control of her public image in an era when overexposure can destroy careers. She has never had open social media accounts. She prefers that her contracts, not her vacation photos, do the talking.
After moving away from intense physical action roles, she turned to the arthouse films of Wes Anderson. In 2023, she appeared in Asteroid City, and a year later she voiced one of the main characters in Transformers One. Her work as a producer also grew with the founding of her own company to develop independent projects.
In 2025, her casting to lead the next installment of the Jurassic World franchise, directed by Gareth Edwards, was confirmed. Filming was scheduled in locations in Thailand and studios in the United Kingdom, with an estimated budget of $200 million.
Her contract includes an executive producer clause that gives her control over the film's final cut.
