The Pretoria Script

Elon Musk landed in Los Angeles with the look of someone who has already seen the ending of the movie before the cameras start rolling. In 2008, he was broke. Tesla and SpaceX were burning through money at a pace that would have made any Hollywood studio in the middle of a budget crisis turn pale, but Musk decided to bet everything on the last roll of the dice.

And it worked out.

He was born in 1971 in South Africa. His childhood was far from idyllic: bullying at school and a tense relationship with his father forged an obsessive personality. He read comic books and programmed on a Commodore 64 while other kids played rugby in the schoolyard.

In 1995, he founded Zip2 with his brother Kimbal. They sold the company for 307 million dollars in 1999, and Musk pocketed a clean 22 million. It was the first big check in a series whose financial ceiling is still unknown.

Shortly after, X.com was created, which after a messy merger ended up becoming PayPal. In 2002, eBay bought the platform for $1,500 million. Musk was fired as CEO while on vacation, but that move gave him the capital needed to fund his own production fantasies.

Special Effects and Real Rockets

The aerospace industry operated as an exclusive club of governments and military contractors until he decided to rewrite the rulebook. In 2002, he founded SpaceX with a goal that sounded like a B-movie sci-fi plot. He wanted to colonize Mars to ensure the survival of the human species.

He traveled to Russia to buy refurbished ballistic missiles because they were cheaper than American rockets. Veteran engineers laughed at his methods and his lack of technical experience. But in 2008, the Falcon 1 reached Earth's orbit after three failed attempts that nearly sank the company.

Risk is his only comfort zone.

Tesla was not originally his idea. He came in as an investor in 2004 and ended up taking full control after an internal power struggle that left several corporate casualties along the way. The Model S changed how people viewed electric cars in 2012 by proving that batteries could be fast and desirable to the general public.

In 2015, he co-founded OpenAI and shortly after Neuralink. The latter company aims to implant chips in the human brain to merge our consciousness with artificial intelligence. So while some people worry about social media algorithms, he prefers to design the hardware that will connect directly to our neurons.

Taking Control of the Footage

The purchase of Twitter in 2022 for $44,000 million shattered every known financial model. Musk walked into the company's headquarters carrying a physical sink to pull off a visual pun in front of the cameras. It was his loudest statement of intent to date.

He's a celebrity who doesn't play supporting roles.

Many analysts see this move as a monumental miscalculation. Others believe it is the piece he needed to control the flow of global information without outside filters. The social network was renamed X in 2023 and lost much of its advertising value in just twelve months of erratic management.

His role in American politics became more explicit during 2024. He took an active part in the election campaign and consistently used his platform to influence public opinion. Because Musk isn't just interested in building things; he aims to steer the discourse of civilization as a whole.

In 2025, SpaceX's valuation surpassed $210,000 million while testing of the Starship continued at its Texas facilities. The Raptor 3 engine uses liquid methane and liquid oxygen as propellants at a chamber pressure of 350 bar.
