Jodie Turner-Smith was working at a bank in Pittsburgh when a chance encounter turned her life upside down. She wasn't looking for fame and had no prior acting training. But musician Pharrell Williams saw her and insisted she should try her luck in modeling and acting.
She quit her office job and moved to Los Angeles with no safety net. Before landing roles with real weight, she spent years working as a model and appearing in music videos. In 2013, she landed a small part on True Blood, which gave her a firsthand look at how a professional set works.
They were years of quiet learning.
In 2017, she took part in the series Nightflyers, based on a story by George R.R. Martin. Critics were not especially kind to the production, but her performance caught the attention of casting directors. That led to her first major leading role on the big screen.
In 2019, she shot Queen & Slim alongside Daniel Kaluuya. She played a lawyer who ends up on the run across the United States after an incident with a police officer during a first date. The film grossed 47 million dollars on a modest budget and made her one of the most promising new faces in the industry.
Critics praised her ability to convey authority and fear at the same time. And the gamble paid off.
In 2021, she took on the challenge of playing Anne Boleyn in a British miniseries for Channel 5. The announcement sparked a wave of racist comments because a Black woman was going to play the queen consort of England. Turner-Smith ignored the noise and focused on portraying motherhood and the political pressure of the Tudor era.
The series was sold to more than ten countries despite the initial controversy.
But her career was not limited to historical or social dramas. In 2021, she shared the screen with Michael B. Jordan in Without Remorse, playing an elite military officer. The physical training for that shoot lasted several months, and she performed much of her own action work.
In 2024, she joined the Star Wars franchise with the series The Acolyte, where she brought Mother Aniseya to life. Filming took place mainly at Shinfield Studios in the United Kingdom. It was a project that demanded complete control of body language and the use of complex prosthetics.
Her personal life also made headlines when she filed for divorce from actor Joshua Jackson in 2023, after four years of marriage. The couple has a daughter together, and the process was settled privately, without major leaks to the tabloids. She chose to focus on the contracts she had already signed.
She didn't ask permission to lead major productions.
In 2025, she appeared in TRON: Ares, directed by Joachim Rønning. The project had an estimated budget of $150 million and was shot in Vancouver using cutting-edge motion capture technology.
