Gillian Anderson landed in Vancouver in 1993 with a suitcase and the feeling that this shoot about aliens wouldn't last long. Fox didn't want her. They were looking for an actress with a more explosive look and less brainpower (a profile similar to the leads of Baywatch), but creator Chris Carter stood firm against the executives.
And the gamble paid off.
For nine years she played Dana Scully in The X-Files, and that role defined her career before she herself knew what kind of actress she wanted to be. The success was so massive that the industry tried to typecast her in roles as a cold scientist or a federal agent in a suit. But Anderson had other plans, which didn't include staying in California signing autographs at sci-fi conventions.
In 1997, she found out she was being paid far less than her co-star David Duchovny. That pay gap pushed her to fight for her contracts with a toughness that was unusual for actresses of her generation. It took her three seasons to achieve pay parity.
In 2002, the original series ended, and the actress made a decision that her Los Angeles agents called professional suicide. She left the United States and took refuge in London.
London changed everything.
She was after the anonymity of theater and the depth of British classics. In 2005, she filmed the miniseries Bleak House for the BBC, playing Lady Dedlock. That role showed European critics that Anderson could handle period drama with the same precision as forensic science.
The actress turned down huge paychecks in Hollywood to work in London's West End. In 2009, she starred in A Doll's House at the Donmar Warehouse and received praise for her ability to sustain tension in confined spaces. Her technique became more physical and less dependent on dialogue.
In 2013, she returned to television with The Fall. Her role as detective Stella Gibson broke the mold of the police drama by featuring a woman who lived her sexuality without explanation and hunted killers with icy calm. The series was shot in Belfast and ran for three seasons, ending in 2016.
Nobody expected that comeback.
In 2019, she accepted the role of Jean Milburn in Sex Education for Netflix. Playing an eccentric, uninhibited sex therapist let her explore comedy from an angle she had never tried during her years of pure drama. Filming in Wales ran until 2023 and drew a young audience who weren't born yet when she was chasing aliens.
But the most complex challenge came in 2020 with The Crown. Playing Margaret Thatcher required dental prosthetics and a vocal transformation that bordered on caricature, but Anderson grounded it in physical rigidity. Her preparation included months of studying recordings of the former prime minister to nail that downward-inflected voice.
In 2024, she played journalist Emily Maitlis in the film Scoop. The script focuses on the BBC interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Anderson had to recreate the exact gestures of an interview that millions of people had already seen on YouTube.
For the shoot of Scoop in 2024, the makeup designer spent three hours a day applying facial prosthetics to replicate the bone structure of the real journalist.
