Nathaniel Arcand was born in Edmonton in 1971. He is a man of the Nehiyaw nation who never planned to live in the spotlight. Before his first audition, he worked ordinary jobs far from the film sets of Vancouver and Toronto.
His official debut came in 1994 with the film Savage Land. It was a small role, but it got casting directors to take notice of his look. Then came his first big break in the series North of 60 that same year.
Television was her real school.
He played William MacNeil for three consecutive years. He gained experience managing production schedules and the pressure of weekly deliveries. But the Canadian market has a glass ceiling that Arcand would take years to break through for good.
In 2003, he took part in the miniseries Dreamkeeper. He earned a supporting actor's salary as his name began to circulate in Los Angeles offices. His ability to perform action scenes without stunt doubles caught the attention of stunt coordinators.
In 2007, he joined the cast of Heartland to play Scott Cardinal. Nobody expected the show to become a long-running hit on Canadian public television. He stayed with the project until 2021, with recurring appearances that gave him financial stability.
He shot exactly 94 episodes of this family drama. During that time he balanced ranch work with darker roles in series such as Blackstone between 2011 and 2015. There he explored a much rawer story about life on the reserves.
The pace never slowed down.
He was looking for projects that moved away from the historical caricature of Native Americans. So he agreed to join Frontier in 2017 (a Netflix and Discovery Canada production). He shared scenes with Jason Momoa and adapted to a physically grueling shoot in extreme weather conditions.
His definitive jump in scale came in 2020 when he signed on to FBI: Most Wanted. He played Agent Clinton Skye under producer Dick Wolf. It was his first major contract on a mainstream U.S. network with a potential audience of millions.
But his exit from the series in 2021 was abrupt. There were no big public explanations or detailed press releases. He simply stopped appearing in the scripts for season two due to creative decisions made by the executive producer.
And then the call from Martin Scorsese came.
In 2023, he appeared in Killers of the Flower Moon as Ancestor. It was a production with a budget of $200 million where historical accuracy was the absolute priority. Arcand worked in an environment of extreme technical demands, surrounded by Panavision cameras and period sets.
In 2024, he played Arnook in the live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender for Netflix. His schedule for 2025 includes production on The Canid. The filming contract for this latter project calls for six weeks of work on indoor locations.
