Raymond Ablack didn't land a role by luck at a Los Angeles casting call. Born in Toronto, he grew up under the discipline of ice hockey and choir classes in an Indo-Guyanese family. Before stepping onto a professional set, he spent four years training at the Young People’s Theatre in his hometown.
The stage was never a game to him.
In 2007, he landed the role of Sav Bhandari in Degrassi: The Next Generation. It was his first serious contract and lasted five seasons, during which he shot more than a hundred episodes. That show worked as an intensive school of on-camera acting technique while other cast members chased fast fame in music.
But Ablack decided not to give up his books. While playing a model teen on national television, he studied in parallel at Ryerson University. He wanted an academic degree in case the industry decided to turn its back on him once he turned twenty.
Leaving a teen series is often a career suicide for many Canadian actors. The stigma of the teen character follows performers for decades. Ablack avoided that fate by taking small and supporting roles in genre productions such as Orphan Black or Defiance between 2013 and 2016.
Surviving early fame requires iron-clad patience.
Few viewers know that Raymond spends much of his free time on stand-up comedy. He trained at The Second City in Toronto to sharpen his comic timing. That technical training helped him stand out in 2017 when he joined the cast of Shadowhunters playing a character who demanded total control of tone.
In 2021, his name started appearing on lists of the most bankable actors on streaming platforms. Netflix released Ginny & Georgia, and his performance as Joe put him on the global radar. Almost at the same time, he joined the miniseries Maid, where he showed he could carry social dramas without losing his natural touch.
Humor is a purely technical tool in his process.
In 2022, he starred in the movie Love in the Villa, shot entirely in Verona. It was a project designed for quick viewing during the summer holidays, but viewing numbers confirmed that his presence drew a loyal audience. Despite the media noise, the actor kept his residence in Toronto and avoided a full move to California.
During 2023, the writers' strike in the United States halted production on his main projects. This forced pause let him return to live comedy stages in Canada. It was a period of professional introspection before he resumed long-running shoots in 2024.
And his work plan for the coming years is already set.
The contract for the fourth season of his flagship series includes an exclusivity clause that blocks his schedule until the end of 2025. Shoots in Ontario have become his main base of operations. Production of his new episodes is set to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
