Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva landed in Toronto at age two with a suitcase full of family expectations that had nothing to do with show business. Her father was a computer programmer and her mother was an artist. Before stepping onto a professional set, she was a competitive gymnast, and that physical discipline helped her endure the grueling shoots that came later.
In 2006, she joined the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation. She wasn't a star yet, but she learned to hit her marks and keep up with the daily rhythm of a busy production. That show was the stepping stone she needed to cross over to the United States.
Canadian television was her real school.
The casting call for The Vampire Diaries in 2009 was looking for a conventional all-American girl for the role of Elena Gilbert. Dobrev convinced the producers she could be that vulnerable teen and, at the same time, her wicked nemesis. The dual role demanded workdays that bordered on total physical exhaustion.
For six seasons, she was the center of a fan phenomenon that exceeded The CW's expectations. But in 2015, she decided her time on Atlanta was over. Giving up a multimillion-dollar salary to pursue a foothold in film was a risky move that the industry examined closely.
Her exit from the series coincided with a firm determination not to keep playing teen roles. In 2012, she had already tested the waters with a supporting role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. That film earned her the critical respect that teen television often denies.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, she pursued mainstream action films with XXX: Return of Xander Cage. Sharing the screen with Vin Diesel gave her access to a global market quite different from the one built around school hallways. That same year, she appeared in the remake of Flatliners, a production that didn't meet box office expectations but kept her on the radar of major studios.
Acting was never her only goal. In 2021, she launched her own wine brand and began getting involved in the executive production of her projects. That drive for creative control came to life when she directed the short film The One in 2021.
Dobrev quickly realized the studio system was changing. In 2021, she starred in Love Hard for a streaming platform. It was one of the most-watched romantic comedies of that holiday season. But she kept looking for roles with greater physical demands or different gender nuances.
In 2023, she shot The Out-Laws alongside Pierce Brosnan. The film blended action and comedy under the banner of Adam Sandler's production company. Shortly after, she joined the cast of The Bricklayer, a spy thriller filmed in Greece that hit theaters in 2024.
She starred in and executive produced the film Reunion in 2024.
The film was made on an independent financing model. Principal photography for this mystery project lasted just five weeks on location in Illinois. The final budget for The Bricklayer was set at $21 million.
