Glen Powell isn't a product designed by a Los Angeles talent agency. He was born in Austin in 1988 and spent more than a decade taking roles other actors would have turned down out of pure ego. He hustled the streets of Hollywood for years while watching others from his generation climb the podium ahead of him.
His first real acting job came in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003. He was fifteen years old and had just a couple of lines in a production that gave no hint of stardom. It was a long time before anyone took a second look at that square-jawed kid with the textbook smile.
And the wait was long.
In 2014, he appeared in The Expendables 3 alongside Sylvester Stallone. It looked like the big breakthrough, but the phone stopped ringing as often as expected after the release. Powell went back to the grind of auditions and supporting roles in TV series that barely lasted a season.
But the actor never stopped writing his own stories in his spare time. He knew that depending solely on a casting director's approval was a losing strategy in an industry crowded with similar faces.
Powell's real break came from a personal failure. In 2018, he auditioned for the role of Rooster in the sequel to Top Gun. He lost the part to Miles Teller.
That defeat knocked him down for a few days. Still, Tom Cruise saw something in his screen tests and decided Powell had to be in the movie at all costs. He was offered the role of Hangman (a character who was flat and unlikable in the original script), on the condition that he help give the character depth.
Top Gun: Maverick grossed 1,495 million dollars worldwide after its release in 2022. Powell stole every scene he was in and became the face of a new, old-school Hollywood.
The gamble paid off.
From then on, the actor decided he didn't want to be just a pretty face. In 2023, he co-wrote and starred in Hit Man under the direction of Richard Linklater. In the film, Powell plays a professor who poses as a hired killer for the New Orleans police.
The box office confirmed his star power with Anyone But You at the end of 2023. The film cost 25 million dollars and ended up surpassing 220 million in global box office. It marked the return of the traditional romantic comedy to movie theaters around the world.
Powell approaches the business as a mix of Texan charisma and total control over his public image. In 2024, he led the cast of Twisters, playing a storm chaser who used social media to fund his scientific expeditions.
He isn't chasing approval from intellectual critics, but impact on mainstream pop culture. During the shoot of Twisters in Oklahoma, the crew had to deal with real storms that halted production several times.
In 2025, filming is scheduled to begin on the remake of The Running Man under the direction of Edgar Wright. The contract includes an exclusivity clause covering international promotional dates.
