Nicola Correia Damude didn't start chasing the glow of Hollywood spotlights. Her roots are at the Stratford Festival, where she learned to command silence and verse before facing a close-up. The discipline of Canadian theater shaped a way of working that puts the text ahead of the image.
She trained at the National Theatre School of Canada, where she came to understand that her mixed heritage, with roots in Guyana and Ireland, was a storytelling tool rather than an obstacle. Still, the leap to the screen wasn't immediate: she preferred to work the local theater stages before moving on to television studios.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2016 her face became recognized worldwide thanks to Shadowhunters. Playing Maryse Lightwood gave her a level of visibility that theater could not offer. But she avoided being typecast in youth genre work and sought projects with a more evident political charge.
In 2018 she joined the cast of Burden of Truth to play Elena Gallegos. This legal series allowed her to explore more restrained registers over four years. It was a period of technical stability in which she began alternating drama with brief appearances in major action productions.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
In 2019 she appeared in The Boys, playing Diane. It's a supporting but key role for understanding the moral drift of some of the leads. Her name began to appear on casting directors' lists looking for characters with authority and an imposing physical presence.
Because the Canadian market sometimes falls short, Nicola Correia Damude jumped into big-budget science fiction. In 2021 she appeared in Foundation, Apple TV+'s ambitious bet. That same year she voiced characters in the video game Far Cry 6, a field that demands vocal precision she had already mastered during her years of classical theater.
Her work in 2022 on the series Coroner as Gina Flores confirmed her interest in quality procedurals. But the actress has also devoted time to advocating for authentic representation in the industry. She is openly bisexual and uses her platform to push for better scripts when it comes to diversity.
She doesn't accept flat characters who exist only to fill screen time. She prefers roles with real contradictions, such as her role in 2023 in the series The Way Home. There, she handles a family narrative that moves away from special effects to focus on blood ties.
The industry is a numbers machine.
In 2024 she shot several episodes of the series Skymed, playing Captain Katherine “Chopper” Miller. Filming involved coordinating complex flight sequences in remote locations in northern Canada. The series wrapped that season with an estimated budget of CAD 15 million.
