Sonequa Martin-Green graduated with a theater degree from the University of Alabama in 2007. She wasn't chasing instant fame, but she moved to New York to line up auditions while working temp jobs. Her first real break came with small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Army Wives.
It was a period of quiet learning.
In 2009, she landed a recurring role on The Good Wife. She played Courtney Wells and learned there how the machinery of a major national television network worked. But the real turning point came when she auditioned for a character who didn't even exist in Robert Kirkman's original comics.
The producers of The Walking Dead were looking for someone to play Michonne, but Martin-Green did not fit that physical profile. Still, they liked her audition so much that they created Sasha Williams specifically for her in 2012. What was meant to be a brief appearance ended up lasting five full seasons.
Sasha became the moral compass of a group of survivors surrounded by the walking dead. Martin-Green shot her final scene on the series in 2017 after complex negotiations to move on to another top-tier franchise. The chance to command a starship was already on the table with her agent.
Space was the logical next step.
In 2017, it was announced that she would play Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery. She was the first Black woman to lead a series in this franchise without initially taking the captain's chair. Filming in Toronto demanded fourteen-hour days and grueling physical preparation for action scenes involving alien prosthetics.
The most devoted purists criticized certain changes to the franchise's official timeline. But the series held its ground and stayed on air until its fifth and final season, which aired in 2024. Martin-Green also served as an executive producer in the final stretch of the show to gain creative control over her character.
Between interstellar voyages, she found time for big-budget commercial films. In 2021, she played Kamiyah James in Space Jam: A New Legacy alongside LeBron James. The project grossed more than $160 million worldwide despite negative reviews from the specialized press.
The human drama replaced the special effects.
After hanging up her Starfleet uniform, she turned to more intimate stories rooted in social reality. In 2024, she premiered My Dead Friend Zoe at the South by Southwest festival. It is a drama about war veterans in which she shares the bill with actors of the caliber of Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman.
The production of this film used a financing model based on tax credits for renewable energy. It is a technical detail that reflects the actress's interest in new approaches to financial management in the Hollywood industry. Filming was completed in just three weeks on location in Oregon.
