Cathy Tyson arrived on the set of Mona Lisa in 1986 without ever having worked on a film shoot. She was barely twenty years old and had a purely stage-based training forged at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. Neil Jordan was looking for a fresh face who could hold her own opposite Bob Hoskins, and he found her in this young actress of Trinidadian descent. That role as Simone not only earned her a Golden Globe nomination but also placed her at the center of a social debate about race and prostitution in Margaret Thatcher's London.
And the gamble paid off.
But early success is often a double-edged sword in an industry that didn't know what to do with a Black woman who didn't fit the stereotypes of the era. In 1988, she crossed the Atlantic to shoot The Serpent and the Rainbow under the direction of Wes Craven. It was a foray into big-budget horror that did well at the box office, but Tyson soon decided to return to England. She had no interest in the California studio system because she preferred the rawness of British realism.
In the early nineties, top-tier film offers began to dry up. The actress turned to the stage and to television projects that let her explore more complex characters. In 1995, she joined the cast of Band of Gold to play Carol Shipley. The series, about sex workers in Bradford, was a ratings hit in the UK and remained on air until 1997.
Television was her refuge for years.
During this period, she balanced her work in front of the cameras with active advocacy for diversity in the performing arts. The reality for a Black actress in late-twentieth-century England was a concrete wall that Tyson tried to break down one script at a time. She took part in BBC productions and Royal Shakespeare Company plays while raising her son with actor Craig Charles, from their marriage.
After a period of relative professional calm, Tyson enjoyed an enviable technical and critical comeback. In 2021, she took the role of Poly in the TV movie Help, where she shared scenes with Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham. Her performance as a care home worker during the toughest months of the pandemic earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2022. It was a recognition that came three decades after her first major international nomination.
Late recognition did not change her work pace.
In 2022, she joined Neil Gaiman's universe to appear in the series The Sandman as Ethel Cripps. It was a high-budget production that connected her with a global audience much younger than the one that remembered her early work with Neil Jordan. She has always stayed grounded, however, and has continued to prioritize socially driven projects over empty blockbusters.
In 2023, she joined the cast of the series Boiling Point to play Vivian. The series was shot entirely in Manchester under the direction of Philip Barantini. The production had a budget of several million pounds to recreate the tension of a professional kitchen in real time.
