Todd Solondz was looking for a girl who understood rejection on a visceral level. Heather Matarazzo came to the casting for Welcome to the Dollhouse in 1995 with an energy the director had not seen in hundreds of New York hopefuls. She didn't have the conventional beauty of the child stars of the era, and that was precisely what won her the role.
The character of Dawn Wiener became a symbol of teenage cruelty. Matarazzo played a girl who endured bullying and family contempt without sliding into cheap sentimentality or self-pity. She made audiences feel the discomfort of adolescence in every small gesture in front of the camera.
She won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance in 1996.
That recognition opened the doors to an industry that didn't quite know where to place her. Hollywood tried to shape her image, but she preferred to keep a profile tied to socially charged stories. She appeared on Roseanne in 1997, playing Heather, DJ's girlfriend, breaking stereotypes about youth representation on national television.
Disney came calling in 2001 for The Princess Diaries. She played Lilly Moscovitz, the protagonist's best friend, a cynical activist. It was her biggest commercial success and gave her access to a global audience that barely knew her earlier work in independent film.
And the gamble paid off.
She reprised her role in the sequel to 2004 under the direction of Garry Marshall. Despite the massive fame these films brought her, Matarazzo never abandoned the independent circuit, because for her, film was always a political tool rather than a celebrity factory. In 2007, she joined the cast of The L Word to bring Stacy Merkin to life, a character who sparked intense debates among fans of the series.
That shoot lasted only thirty-two days.
Her relationship with the major studios, however, had moments of tension. Matarazzo spoke openly about her sexuality in 2004, when visibility in Los Angeles still carried very real career risks. That honesty held back her casting in certain romantic comedies that were looking for more traditional types for supporting roles.
Eli Roth convinced her to take part in Hostel: Part II in 2007. The death scene is one of the most brutal in horror cinema, thanks to its technical realism and the vulnerability the actress projected. It was a complete change of pace that finally pulled her away from the image of the misfit teen she had been stuck with since the nineties.
In 2022, she returned to the Scream franchise to reprise her role as Martha Meeks. She had appeared briefly in the third installment, and her return was a treat for fans who remembered the family ties between the original characters. Her presence helped connect different eras of the horror story without the need for big speeches.
She never let the industry dictate her personal identity.
During 2024 she worked on the western The Unholy Trinity alongside Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson. Filming took place mainly on location in Montana under extreme weather conditions that forced several exterior sequences to be postponed. The production of this film had an estimated budget of twenty million dollars.
