Angela Robinson hit the Sundance Film Festival in 2003 with a project few knew how to categorize. D.E.B.S. was a short film about teenage spies that blended pop aesthetics with a lesbian sensibility that did not ask permission to exist. The response was so strong that Screen Gems decided to finance the feature-length version in 2004.
That leap was dizzying.
In just twelve months, she went from managing minimal budgets to directing Lindsay Lohan in Herbie: Fully Loaded over 2005. Disney put 80 million dollars in her hands to revive a classic franchise. But the box office result was lukewarm, and critics did not understand why a filmmaker with such a personal universe would take on such a heavy studio assignment.
Robinson chose to retreat into writing and executive producing to regain control of her stories. For 2007, she joined the team on The L Word. There, she not only directed key episodes but also helped define the tone of a show that needed realism within its own bubble of melodrama.
And the gamble paid off.
Her biggest financial success on television came with the fantasy genre. Between 2012 and 2014, she worked as a producer and writer on True Blood for HBO. During that period, she learned to handle the structures of major cable series, where sex and violence served to address social segregation.
It was a period of constant technical learning.
Before returning to film, she worked on the production of How to Get Away with Murder during 2015. Robinson brought a structural vision that helped sustain the series' constant plot twists. But her mind stayed on a project about the creation of modern myths that she had been developing at her desk for years.
Thirteen years passed before she returned to the director's chair for a film project of her own. In 2017, she premiered Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. The film explored the life of William Moulton Marston and the polyamorous relationship that gave rise to the character of Wonder Woman. Critics praised her ability to handle desire without falling into gratuitous sensationalism.
The screenplay moved away from the conventions of the traditional biopic to focus on the psychology of emotional bonds. It grossed just over 1.6 million dollars in the United States. Despite the modest figures, her prestige in the industry soared thanks to the visual elegance of every shot and the smart use of natural light.
In 2020, she signed an exclusive contract with Warner Bros. Television to develop new scripted projects. This deal marked her departure from independent production to rejoin the structure of a major studio. The contract included creating original content and overseeing adaptations of intellectual properties tied to DC Comics.
Robinson maintains her development office in Los Angeles under her own production company.
