Andrew Howard was born in Cardiff in late 1969. He doesn't have a Hollywood leading man's jawline, and he doesn't need one. His career began on the stages of Welsh theaters, but he soon realized his look fit better in stories with more sweat and less makeup.
Nobody handed him a ticket to London.
In 1999, he joined the cast of The Cherry Orchard. That theater experience gave him the chance to share the stage with Alan Bates and dig deeper into classic texts. It was a formative period, as the Welsh actor was building a solid foundation before moving to the big screen.
In 2001, he co-wrote and starred in Shooters. The film was shot in the seedy underworld of the British capital and served as a direct calling card. Howard played a criminal fresh out of prison who tries to rebuild his life without much success in a hostile environment.
The film business doesn't reward friendly faces.
Howard took on roles in horror productions that put him on the radar of genre fans. In 2010, he starred in the new version of I Spit on Your Grave. His portrayal of a corrupt, sadistic sheriff was so convincing that the American film industry began calling him often for villain roles.
Then came the chance to work with Neil Burger. In 2011, he took part in Limitless alongside Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. Howard played a Russian loan shark who hunts the lead character over a blood debt. That role brought him **worldwide visibility** and opened the doors of major television networks.
But the actor never gave up his screenwriting side. In 2009, he wrote Blood River (a psychological thriller shot in the Nevada desert on a tight budget). The film won several awards at independent festivals and proved that Howard had a keen eye for pure narrative tension.
The camera finds him when the script calls for tension.
In 2019, he joined the cast of Watchmen for HBO. He played Red Scare and hid his face behind a red mask for much of the season. It was an exercise in physical restraint that earned him critical respect for conveying danger without relying on facial expressions.
During 2021, he worked on the series Mayor of Kingstown. He shared scenes with Jeremy Renner in a storyline about the American prison system. Howard feels at home in these gray settings, where the morality of the characters is hard for the average viewer to pin down.
In 2023, he took part in The Continental. The series works as a prequel to the John Wick franchise, and Howard plays a key figure in the criminal structure of 1970s New York. The production reportedly had a budget of **$20 million per episode** according to industry sources.
In 2024, he shot his scenes for the new version of The Crow under director Rupert Sanders. The actor plays a man named Wood in a story that aims to update the myth of the supernatural avenger. Filming took place mainly on locations in Prague and Munich.
