Hong Chau was born in 1979 inside a refugee camp in Thailand. Her parents had fled Vietnam on a fishing boat and spent months waiting for a final destination, which turned out to be New Orleans. There she grew up eating rice and beans and learning that silence was the best survival tool for an immigrant family.
She studied film at Boston University because her original plan was to stay behind the camera, writing or editing. But her classmates kept pushing her to act in their short films because they couldn't find anyone else with her look. It was a logistical accident that ended up defining her career decades later.
And the chain reaction worked.
Before landing major studio work, she spent years taking tiny roles on television. In 2010 she appeared in Treme, and in 2014 Paul Thomas Anderson gave her a part in Inherent Vice. They weren't roles to shine in, but they paid the rent in an industry that didn't yet know where to place her.
In 2017, Alexander Payne cast her in Downsizing, and the media buzz was deafening. She played a Vietnamese activist with a heavy accent that many critics called caricatured or even racist. But Chau stood her ground and explained in several interviews that it was exactly how her mother spoke.
She defended her work against Hollywood's political correctness with a coolness that disarmed her critics. That performance earned her first Golden Globe nomination and made it clear she wasn't seeking easy approval from audiences. She preferred the uncomfortable truth of her roots to a sugarcoated performance for Western consumption.
The industry had to fall silent.
Between 2022 and 2023, she landed three projects that took her from supporting actress to an essential name in Hollywood. In The Menu, she played a icy head waiter, and in The Whale she played opposite Brendan Fraser with an emotional weight that earned her first Oscar nomination. Her per-film salary multiplied, as studios realized Chau could carry the weight of a big-budget production without breaking a sweat.
In 2023, she worked under Wes Anderson on Asteroid City, bringing a dry, understated performance that fit the director's style. She stopped being the actress who played the immigrant and became the actress filmmakers wanted on their sets. Her screen presence doesn't rely on likability but on a natural authority that you can't learn in drama school.
She doesn't like red carpets.
In 2024, she took part in Kinds of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos and filmed several scenes in New Orleans, the city where she spent her childhood. Filming for this production lasted exactly 36 days in the state of Louisiana.
