Joel Courtney did not land in Los Angeles with a meticulously planned career strategy. In 2010, he only meant to spend a school vacation with his older brother and land a small role in advertising to cover his expenses. But chance put him in front of the casting directors of a major production looking for unknown faces.
After a massive casting process with thousands of hopefuls, he landed the lead role in Super 8. J.J. Abrams wanted a natural quality that Courtney retained intact simply because he had never attended a professional acting school.
The film premiered worldwide on 2011.
That debut had an immediate impact on the industry and earned him the Saturn Award for Best Young Actor. His portrayal of Joe Lamb stood out for a mix of vulnerability and technical strength that few child actors manage to achieve without seeming artificial on camera.
Staying relevant in Hollywood after reaching the top at fifteen was no easy task. Over the following five years, Courtney took on a range of projects, including Sins of our Youth in 2014 and the sci-fi series The Messengers for the CW network in 2015.
That series was canceled after its first season.
He learned early that fame is a volatile asset unless it's backed by a solid foundation of steady work. He appeared in independent films and genre movies that slipped quietly into theaters, but they gave him a chance to hone his craft on sets that were less protected than the major leagues of Steven Spielberg.
In 2018, his career found a new engine thanks to streaming. Netflix released The Kissing Booth, and the phenomenon among teen audiences was so massive that the platform quickly commissioned several direct sequels.
He played Lee Flynn in all three installments of the franchise released between 2018 and 2021.
This stage gave him global visibility that surpassed even his early beginnings. But Courtney chose not to be typecast as the eternal teenager and began looking for scripts with more specific dramatic weight or based on true stories.
In 2020, he married Mia Scholink in a private ceremony in Phoenix.
That major life change coincided with his role in 2023 in the film Jesus Revolution. He played Greg Laurie in a biographical drama that managed to gross more than fifty million dollars in the U.S. market despite a modest budget.
In 2024, he joined the cast of the comedy Players alongside Gina Rodriguez. Filming took place mainly at various locations in New York City under the technical supervision of director Trish Sie.
