Gabriel Basso is not the typical lab-made product from Los Angeles. In 2023, the industry focused on him again thanks to The Night Agent, but his relationship with the camera began long before Netflix handed him the keys to a global hit. His face became familiar in 2011 with Super 8, directed by J.J. Abrams.
He was a kid surrounded by special effects and 1980s nostalgia. But while other peers of his generation chased covers of teen magazines, he preferred the martial arts gym. His training in jiu-jitsu and boxing defines the way he moves in front of the camera.
Nobody expected him back.
In 2013 he starred in The Kings of Summer, a film that is now a cult favorite on the independent circuit. Basso played a teenager who runs away from home to build a cabin in the woods. That search for independence on screen soon became a personal reality far from the spotlight.
Between 2016 and 2020, the actor disappeared from major productions. It wasn't a decline caused by a lack of offers, but a conscious choice to focus on his life away from film sets. During that time, he devoted himself to illustration and high-level combat training.
Film became a side job.
Basso has said in several interviews that he doesn't consider himself an artist in the pretentious sense of the word. For him, acting is a physical trade. In 2020, he returned with Hillbilly Elegy to work under Ron Howard. He lost weight and changed his posture to fit the role of J.D. Vance, sharing the screen with Glenn Close and Amy Adams.
Critics were harsh on the film but unanimous in their praise of his performance. Basso proved he could carry a big-budget biographical drama without relying on makeup tricks. His on-screen presence is built on a restraint that few actors his age handle so naturally.
In 2023, the series The Night Agent accumulated more than 800 million viewing hours in its first months. Basso played Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent caught in a phone conspiracy inside the White House. He performed almost all of his own stunts without doubles, thanks to his previous experience in contact sports.
But massive success didn't change his career path. In 2024, he appeared in The Strangers: Chapter 1, returning to the horror genre that launched his career. Soon after, Clint Eastwood called him to shoot Juror No. 2, where Basso played a defendant on trial for murder.
Working with Eastwood is the ultimate seal of approval for any actor looking for longevity. The veteran director is known for shooting few takes and demanding total preparation before arriving on set. Basso fits well into that dry, efficient approach to work.
The gamble paid off.
Outside of acting, he keeps a low profile on social media and still competes in mixed martial arts. In 2025, his schedule included producing the second season of his espionage series and several pure action film projects. The production of Juror No. 2 wrapped its post-production phase with a final cut of 114 minutes.
