Madelaine Petsch grew up between Washington and South Africa, feeling like she didn't fit in anywhere. Her parents were South African, and she spoke with an accent that her classmates in the United States wouldn't let go. That childhood of isolation caused by bullying became the driving force behind an ambition that took her to Los Angeles as soon as she turned 18.
She worked three jobs at once to pay her rent while going to advertising auditions. But her look didn't fit the standard Californian girl mold of the time. In 2015, she landed a small role in the film The Hive, and a year later she appeared in The Curse of Sleeping Beauty.
There was no Plan B.
In 2017, The CW was looking for an antagonist for its new teen series based on the Archie comics. Petsch auditioned for the role of Betty Cooper, but the casting directors saw something different in her look. She ended up playing Cheryl Blossom for seven full seasons until the series finale in 2023.
The industry tends to typecast young faces from fast-paced television. But she decided she wasn't going to sit around waiting for the phone to ring with mediocre offers. In 2020, she made the leap into executive producing with the thriller Sightless, in which she also played a blind woman stalked in her own apartment.
That financial move allowed her to choose projects with greater creative freedom. In 2022, she led the cast of Jane, a film that explores mental breakdown in elite academic environments. Petsch managed the rights to the work and got involved in the final edit to ensure the tone was just right.
And the risk paid off.
Her ability to draw massive audiences is reflected in her YouTube channel, where she has millions of followers. She doesn't use the platform to post empty content; instead, she builds a personal brand that gives her independence from major studios. Her contracts include specific clauses about her image and her vegan diet since she was a child.
The year 2024 marked her definitive entry into big-budget horror. She signed on to lead the new trilogy of The Strangers under the direction of Renny Harlin. The filming of these three movies was shot simultaneously in Slovakia over fifty-two working days of night shoots.
In The Strangers: Chapter 1, she plays Maya, a young woman who must survive a random siege at a remote cabin. Critics praised her physical endurance in a production that required running in the rain at freezing temperatures for weeks. The actress performed 90 percent of her own stunts without the need for professional stunt doubles.
Production company Lionsgate's strategy is to release all three installments in staggered fashion to maximize box office performance. Petsch has signed on for her role throughout the entire franchise, which will wrap up her character's arc with the release of the third chapter. The total budget for the three films came to $8.5 million per movie.
