The Face Horror Needed

Richard Brake has a face that looks like it was hammered out of a quarry in Wales. He was born in Ystrad Mynach in 1964, but his life story has been shaped by constant crossings of the Atlantic. He grew up in states like North Carolina and Ohio (where his family moved when he was a boy), and that cultural duality gave him a vocal range that keeps casting directors guessing. He studied acting in New York and later in London under Sam Kogan.

His official debut came in 1993 on the British series Casualty. For a decade, he took supporting roles that barely tapped his physical potential. But the turn of the century brought a break that defined his commercial career. In 2005, Christopher Nolan gave him the role of Joe Chill in Batman Begins. He was the man who pulled the trigger on Bruce Wayne's parents.

He only needed one scene.

That same year, he took part in the film adaptation of Doom. He played Dean Portman and proved that his unsettling presence worked just as well in science fiction as it did in crime drama. From then on, the industry branded him the perfect villain. But Brake never limited himself to repeating the same one-dimensional bad guy.

An Alliance with Excess

In 2016, his career took a more visceral turn thanks to Rob Zombie. In the film 31, he played Doom-Head (a psychotic killer who opens the movie with a ten-minute monologue facing the camera). It was a risky bet. The shoot lasted only twenty days, and Brake filmed his part in record time. Critics praised his ability to sustain tension without blinking.

And the gamble paid off.

His work with Zombie continued in 2019 with 3 from Hell, where he replaced the void left by Sid Haig. Brake sees genre cinema as a test of physical endurance. He doesn't mind spending hours in the makeup chair or shooting in extreme weather. Because his physique is his contract.

Between 2014 and 2015, he took on a role that brought him worldwide fame without the public ever seeing his real face. He was the first Night King in Game of Thrones. He appeared in key episodes such as Hardhome, where his gesture of raising his arms to resurrect the dead became a recurring image in pop culture. He left the series over scheduling conflicts and was replaced by Vladimir Furdik.

His silence pays better than his dialogue.

Refuge in Independent Film

Despite appearing in major productions such as Thor: The Dark World (2013) and The Mandalorian (2020), he prefers projects where the director has full control. In 2018, he appeared in Mandy alongside Nicolas Cage. His portrayal of the chemist who supplies drugs to a cult was brief but enough to cement his status in cult cinema. Panos Cosmatos wanted a presence that would feel timeless, and Brake fit into the frame from the first rehearsal.

In 2022, he surprised audiences in Barbarian as Frank. The movie became an unexpected box office and critical hit. Zach Cregger's script demanded a very delicate balance between repulsion and fragility. Brake shot his scenes in Bulgaria under minimal lighting to maintain the oppressive atmosphere the house's basement required.

In 2023, he premiered The Last Stop in Yuma County (a classic-style thriller in which he plays a bank robber trapped at a gas station). The project was independently financed and shot in desert locations in California. The film won awards at specialized festivals such as Sitges and confirmed his standing as an actor who elevates any low-budget production.

In 2024, he took part in the shoot of Absentia under the direction of Simon P. Edwards. The production took place in various locations across the United Kingdom with a small crew. The contract called for twelve-hour workdays and a strict confidentiality policy over the final script.
