Carl Weathers came to the big screen with an elite athlete's body and the jawline of a 1950s leading man. In 1974, he left professional football to make a living in Los Angeles. He had no formal dramatic training, but his physical presence, honed during his time with the Oakland Raiders, more than made up for it.
During the casting of Rocky in 1975, the actor openly criticized the boxing style of Sylvester Stallone. That natural arrogance convinced the producers they had found the perfect Apollo Creed. He signed a contract that would change his bank account forever and had to train like a real boxer for months.
And the gamble paid off.
The character of Apollo Creed was not the typical flat villain of the sports movies of the era. Weathers gave him a mix of charisma and vulnerability that forced the industry to see him in a new light. But typecasting lurked around every corner in Hollywood.
In 1987 he took part in Predator alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. His biceps duel at the start of the film is one of the most memorable moments of action cinema from that decade. The film grossed $98 million worldwide and placed him at the forefront of musclebound heroes.
He tried to make the leap to leading man with Action Jackson in 1988. The film did well at the box office, but critics were relentless about the script. So he decided to explore less physically demanding roles to keep his career from fading as the 1990s arrived.
Adam Sandler called him in 1996 for Happy Gilmore. Playing a retired golfer with a wooden hand was a risky move for someone who had just come from killing aliens. Audiences discovered that Weathers had a dry, very effective comedic instinct that he would later exploit on television.
It was a fitting exit.
Starting in the 1990s, he became interested in what happened behind the camera. He directed episodes of series such as Silk Stalkings and Sheena to learn the technical craft. He preferred control of the set to endless waiting in the makeup trailer.
In 2019, he joined the cast of The Mandalorian to play Greef Karga. What started as a supporting role ended up giving him the chance to direct several episodes of the Disney series. His behind-the-camera work in 2021 earned him the respect of the most demanding visual effects technicians in the industry.
He kept a low profile in his private life and focused on managing his own production company. He never disowned commercial cinema or the characters that made him famous in the seventies. But he always made it clear that his true passion was understanding how a scene is put together from a technical standpoint.
Carl Weathers died on February 1, 2024, at the age of 76, at his residence in Los Angeles.
