The anonymity that didn't last long

Camila Mendes came to the Riverdale casting call in 2016 without a single professional credit on her resume. Most of her castmates had already worked on Disney or Nickelodeon productions, but she came straight from the classrooms of the Tisch School of the Arts in New York. That audition for the role of Veronica Lodge was her first real opportunity and also the last one she needed to completely transform her life.

Because the series became a global phenomenon that consumed its stars' privacy for seven straight years. Filming in Vancouver meant fourteen-hour days, and Mendes had to learn to handle sudden fame while signing a contract that tied her to The CW until 2023. That industrial work pace sharpened her craft but also threatened to typecast her as the wealthy, sophisticated teen archetype.

But the plan was different.

In 2020, she took a short break from her TV shoot to join Palm Springs. It was a smart move, because the film moved away from teen drama to embrace an existentialist comedy that did very well at the Sundance Film Festival. There, she played Tala and proved her range could work outside the cardboard sets of her nursery-school-level series (where the dialogue was often impossible to deliver naturally).

The Netflix Algorithm Rebellion

After the series ended in 2023, she looked for projects that would let her explore a more caustic side. In 2022, she starred in Do Revenge alongside Maya Hawke, and the film became an unexpected audience hit. The movie worked as a tribute to the classics of the nineties, but with a contemporary edge that Mendes handled with surgical precision. She earned a seven-figure salary for this project and began demanding producer credits in her subsequent contracts.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2024, she released Upgraded and Musica, taking on her first executive producer role. She didn't want to just wait for her agent to send her generic romantic comedy scripts. So she got involved in developing Musica because the story connected with her Brazilian roots and her bilingualism. Mendes speaks fluent Portuguese after spending a year in Brazil as a child, and that cultural duality has been a constant driving force behind her most recent career decisions.

That was the first step toward total independence.

Total Control of Production

Before shooting Upgraded in 2024, she personally oversaw the casting and script adjustments to make sure the film didn't fall into the most overused tropes of the genre. It's a survival strategy in an industry that often discards actresses who come out of teen series once they hit their thirties. She turned 30 in 2024 with her own production company already up and running and several projects in development that don't depend on the green light of a major traditional studio.

Her training in New York gave her the tools to understand that the film business in the 2020s requires a business mindset. Acting well in front of the camera is no longer enough. That's why Mendes has diversified her portfolio with investments in personal care brands and keeps a tight grip on her public image (avoiding the scandals that derailed other stars of her generation).

Production of Musica in 2024 had an estimated budget of 15 million dollars and was shot mainly in New Jersey under the direction of Rudy Mancuso. Mendes closed the fiscal year with three releases on streaming platforms and an equity stake in two beauty companies. In December 2024, her representation contract with the agency CAA was renewed under exclusivity terms for her own development projects.
