Emma Roberts was never a normal girl in a normal environment.
At nine years old, she was already sharing the screen with Johnny Depp in Blow (2001) under the watchful eye of her aunt Julia Roberts. But the label of America's niece weighed heavily on her. So she set out to build her own path, far from the saccharine romantic comedies that defined her family in the nineties.
The industry was watching her closely.
Her time on Nickelodeon with Unfabulous (2004) was the necessary price to pay for financial independence. But the real change of direction came when Ryan Murphy cast her in American Horror Story: Coven in 2013. That is where the persona young audiences were looking for was born (that mix of sarcasm, luxury and magnetic cruelty).
In 2015, she starred in Scream Queens, and her character Chanel Oberlin became a social media sensation. The tone was self-parodying. Roberts realized her niche was not deep, method-style drama but biting irony and the fast rhythm of sharp dialogue.
And the gamble paid off.
In the years that followed, she alternated TV horror with independent films such as The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015). On that shoot, she proved she could hold silence and tension without needing a killer line every five minutes. Before taking on a role, she reads every contract with the mindset of a businesswoman.
But her ambition went beyond waiting for the phone to ring.
In 2017, she founded Belletrist. It is not just a social media book club but a real production platform. Roberts buys rights to novels before they reach the bestseller lists and turns them into audiovisual content under her own control.
In 2020, she produced and starred in Holidate for Netflix. The film racked up 68 million views in its first month on the platform. It proved that her name could sell subscriptions without a big marketing budget.
The algorithm did the rest.
Her foray into superhero movies with Madame Web (2024) was an obvious commercial stumble that critics did not forgive. She played Mary Parker in a production that barely grossed $100 million worldwide against an inflated budget. But Roberts did not dwell on the setback.
That same year, Space Cadet (2024) premiered on Amazon Prime Video, where she served as executive producer. The film was shot on a tight budget and aimed to recapture the spirit of the light comedies of the 2000s. Keeping costs under control is now her absolute priority.
In 2024, her production company signed an exclusive deal with Hulu to develop scripted series under the Belletrist TV label.
