Billy Porter graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a clear idea that musical theater was his only way forward. He wasn't chasing fame but survival. In 1991, he landed a role in Miss Saigon, and that seemed like the start of a straight path. But the Broadway industry has a short memory and a quick temper.
The reality was much harsher.
By the late nineties, his name had disappeared from top billing. The industry didn't know what to do with a Black, openly gay man who didn't fit the stereotypes of the era. In 2007, Porter filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. That same year, he received the HIV diagnosis that he kept secret for fourteen years.
He spent more than a decade working on minor projects and teaching classes to pay off accumulated debts. His return to major stages was not a matter of luck but of physical endurance. In 2013, the premiere of Kinky Boots changed his financial situation for good. Playing Lola earned him the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.
And the gamble paid off.
That role let him explore femininity on a massive commercial platform. New York critics praised his ability to carry a two-hour show in six-inch heels. But Porter was already looking toward cable television.
In 2018, filming began on Pose under the direction of Ryan Murphy. His character, Pray Tell, became the emotional center of a series that portrayed ball culture in 1980s New York. In 2019, he won the Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama.
Porter decided that his public image should be a political tool. His red carpet appearances in velvet skirts and architectural structures aimed to break gender rigidity. But behind the silk was a clear business strategy to diversify his career toward directing and producing.
In 2021, he appeared in the film version of Cinderella produced by Amazon. He played a genderless fairy godmother (Fab G) in the studio's attempt to modernize classic fairy tales. That same year, he publicly revealed that he was HIV-positive in order to remove the stigma that had followed him since 2007.
Because activism without visibility seemed like a waste of time to him.
In 2023, he starred in the drama Our Son alongside Luke Evans. The film follows a gay couple's divorce and the legal battle over custody of their young son. Also in 2023, he joined the cast of the comedy 80 for Brady, playing a cheerleading choreographer.
In 2024, he focused his efforts on pre-production of a biopic about writer James Baldwin. Porter co-wrote the screenplay based on David Leeming's book James Baldwin: A Biography. The production is financially backed by Allen Media Group, and filming was scheduled with a shooting plan of 45 days on location.
