Jessica Alba didn't ask for permission to break into movies. She was twelve when she won an acting contest in Beverly Hills, and the prize was a summer acting course. Nine months later, she had an agent. She made her debut in 1994 in Camp Nowhere, in a small role that grew when another actress left the production.
James Cameron was looking for a fresh face for the series Dark Angel in 2000. He turned down more than a thousand candidates before choosing her. Alba landed the role of Max Guevara, and with it came a fame the actress never quite came to terms with. That science fiction series put her on the global map before she turned twenty.
It was a ratings hit and an image trap.
In 2003, she starred in Honey, and the industry quickly typecast her. Two years later came her definitive commercial breakthrough with Sin City and Fantastic Four. It was in 2005 that her public image spiraled out of control. The press treated her as a visual object, and she began to feel uncomfortable with the scripts that landed on her desk.
She got tired of always being the girl who needed rescuing.
But her dissatisfaction wasn't only creative. During the shoot of the sequel to Fantastic Four in 2007, the director asked her to cry more prettily. That comment pushed her to consider leaving the front lines of Hollywood. So she decided that her financial security would not depend on the whims of a producer.
In 2011, she founded The Honest Company. The idea came after she had an allergic reaction to a baby detergent while pregnant with her first daughter. Many analysts in California laughed at the initiative. They saw it as another whim of a famous actress that would last a couple of summers.
And the gamble paid off in a big way.
The company went public in May 2021 with a valuation approaching 1,440 million dollars. Alba proved that her management skills were greater than her ability to memorize mediocre dialogue. During that decade, her screen appearances were few and very carefully chosen.
Between 2019 and 2020, she led the cast of the series L.A.’s Finest alongside Gabrielle Union. It was a move to stay active in the industry without the constraints of major studio contracts. At that stage, she was already in control of her own schedule and financial investments.
In 2024, she returned to pure action movies with Trigger Warning. The film was made for Netflix, and Alba plays a special forces agent who returns to her hometown after her father's death. The shoot was grueling, and she performed much of the fight choreography herself.
The actress stepped down as creative director of The Honest Company in April 2024. She preferred to focus her efforts on her new production company, Lady Spitfire. In that same fiscal year, the company she founded in her kitchen reported annual revenue of 344 million dollars.
