Annalise Basso was ten years old when she realized that acting was not child's play.
She knew it on the set of Bedtime Stories in 2008. But her real trial by fire came five years later with Standing Up, where the weight of the story rested almost entirely on her shoulders and those of Chandler Canterbury. Before shooting, she read the original novel to understand the anguish of two children abandoned at a camp.
That was a statement of intent.
In 2013, she filmed Oculus under the direction of Mike Flanagan. She played the younger version of the lead character, and her ability to sustain fear without resorting to melodramatic screaming caught the attention of casting directors in Los Angeles. Horror gave her the standing that drama had denied her early on. And the gamble paid off.
Basso was born in St. Louis in 1998 and grew up in a family where acting was a common career path for her siblings. But she wanted more than appearing in local TV commercials. So she began choosing projects that would avoid typecasting her as the high school pretty girl.
In 2016, she took part in Captain Fantastic alongside Viggo Mortensen. The shoot required actors to learn real survival techniques, and she met every physical requirement without complaint. That film earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for its entire ensemble cast.
That same year she starred in Ouija: Origin of Evil. The film grossed more than 80 million dollars worldwide and confirmed that her name was profitable for genre studios. But Basso did not want to get stuck in cheap-scare franchises.
Horror gave her the standing that drama had denied her.
In 2019 she shot Lady World, an experimental project that explored the female psyche in a claustrophobic setting. It was a low-budget film with a psychological weight that firmly moved her away from the image of a child star. Before turning twenty, she already had a résumé that many actors in their forties would envy.
The series Snowpiercer marked a shift in scale in 2020. For three seasons she played LJ Folger, a character who moved away from the classic heroine to explore amorality and teen psychopathy on a post-apocalyptic train. And she did it with a coldness that unsettled viewers.
Production on the fourth season suffered major delays due to network changes in 2023. But Basso used that time to return to independent film. In 2020, she also starred in The Bloodhound, an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe that played at specialized festivals without much commercial buzz.
Controlling chaos is her specialty.
In 2024 she joined the cast of The Life of Chuck, an adaptation of a story by Stephen King directed once again by Mike Flanagan. The international distribution deal for this film was closed at the Toronto Film Festival for a multimillion-dollar sum after a bidding war between streaming platforms. Filming of her scenes wrapped in less than three weeks.
