Sarah Dugdale was born in Vancouver in 1995 and grew up surrounded by an industry that often chews up child actors before they learn to read a contract. By sixteen, she was already in front of the cameras. Her professional debut came with no fanfare and no major headlines.
In 2011, she appeared in an episode of The Haunting Hour. It was a small part. But it helped casting directors in British Columbia put her face on the radar of American productions that crossed the border looking for lower costs.
Canadian television is a survival school.
She appeared in Arrow for 2015, playing Becky. Back then, the job meant stringing together one-off roles in genre series, where the key was hitting your call time. In Vancouver's industry, if you're late, someone takes your place during the next coffee break.
In 2020, she joined the cast of Virgin River to play Lizzie. Netflix was looking for a character who would shake up the town's calm, and Dugdale brought the mix of teenage cynicism and vulnerability the storyline needed. Her character went from a narrative nuisance to an emotional pillar across the seasons filmed between 2021 and 2024.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2018, she worked under Rob Lowe on The Bad Seed. Playing Katie allowed her to move away from the girl-next-door image (the label that follows blonde actresses around in North America). The shoot was fast and demanding, but it taught her the language of television suspense.
But it was in 2021 with There’s Someone Inside Your House that she explored the modern slasher under the production umbrella of Shawn Levy. The film went straight to digital platforms. Dugdale shot her stunt scenes in nighttime forests, taking on a physical strain she hadn't experienced during her years in family drama.
So her name began to come up for projects that required more than a smile in front of the camera. In genre cinema she found a space where technique matters more than empty charisma. She wasn't chasing fame quickly, but rather the constant repetition of takes until she found the exact tone of anguish.
During 2023, she got involved in Death of a Whistleblower. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and marked her entry into international political thriller cinema. The six-week shoot in South Africa demanded a tight control of accent and an emotional restraint very different from her earlier work on Canadian sets.
Sometimes success is simply hanging on through the rough patches.
In 2024, production on the sixth season of Virgin River resumed after the labor strikes that froze Hollywood the year before. Dugdale returned to the set to wrap up storylines that had been pending since 2022. The actress keeps her home base in Vancouver, alternating shoots with trips to Los Angeles for auditions on independent projects.
Her distribution deal for her latest television work includes exploitation clauses in more than one hundred ninety countries. Viewing figures for 2023 placed her episodes among the most-watched titles in the global drama catalog. Filming on her next feature was scheduled for the last quarter of 2024 with a budget of less than five million dollars.
