Rick Aviles never needed a ten-page script to make audiences want to see a train run him over. In Ghost, released in 1990, he played Willie Lopez with a chilling coldness that unsettled viewers. That hitman role gave him a level of visibility his years as a New York stand-up comic had never achieved. But his story didn't begin in Hollywood studios.
He was a child of the streets.
Before stepping onto a set, he made a living performing tricks and telling jokes on the corners of Manhattan. He belonged to that generation of Nuyorican artists who transformed the city's humor during the 1970s. His style was fast and aggressive. And he did it without breaking a sweat, because he knew the terrain well.
In 1981, he made his film debut in a small role in The Cannonball Run. But it wasn't until the end of that decade that his face began to recur in productions seeking gritty realism. His gaze conveyed a constant threat that casting directors quickly learned to exploit. He appeared in Street Smart in 1987 alongside Morgan Freeman, and that allowed him to prove he could hold his own against major names without backing down.
The release of Ghost in 1990 permanently changed his career. Playing the man who kills the lead character put him at the center of popular culture. The shoot demanded a physical restraint that contrasted with his usual energy on comedy stages. He earned a supporting actor's salary for a film that ended up grossing over $500 million.
That same year, he worked under Francis Ford Coppola in The Godfather Part III. He played Mask, and although his screen time was brief, his presence added the underworld texture the saga required. His name began to be mentioned for bigger projects in the New York industry.
The public never forgot it.
In 1993, he appeared in Carlito's Way under the direction of Brian De Palma. Aviles had become the essential supporting player for any story that needed a touch of authenticity. He wasn't acting like a criminal; he simply projected what he had observed for decades in his Lower East Side neighborhood.
In 1995, he shot Waterworld alongside Kevin Costner under hellish conditions at sea. He played Gates in one of the most expensive and complicated films in movie history up to that point. Nobody knew then that it would be one of his last major roles.
Rick Aviles died on March 17, 1995, in Los Angeles from complications related to AIDS. He was only 42 years old. His last appearance on the big screen was a voice role in Joe's Apartment, released in 1996. The industry lost a character actor who never needed to be the lead to dominate the scene.
His death certificate recorded multiple organ failure at a hospital in California.
