Brad Sullivan was never a poster star, but his square jaw carried half the industry in the 1970s. He had that weary-guy look that only comes after years of working the Broadway stages before Hollywood took notice. In 1977 he played Morris Wanchuk in Slap Shot and proved he could steal scenes from Paul Newman without breaking a sweat.
He was a character actor in the strictest sense of the term.
His face became indispensable to directors looking for dry, no-nonsense authority. In 1987, Brian De Palma cast him as George Stone in The Untouchables. Sullivan played the expert marksman who joins Eliot Ness's team to clean up Chicago's gangsters.
He didn't need big monologues because his physical presence already conveyed the character's past. But his career wasn't limited to tough guys with badges. In 1991 he worked under Barbra Streisand in The Prince of Tides, where he played Henry Wingo.
Box office success never changed his methodical work pace.
Unlike other supporting actors of his generation, he never chased top billing. He preferred the security of a solid ensemble where every piece fits with surgical precision. In 1993, he appeared in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit as Father Thomas.
And the gamble paid off.
In the 1990s he frequently moved to television, appearing in episodes of Law & Order or NYPD Blue. He always delivered what the script demanded (a stern judge, a corrupt cop or a distant father) without asking for permission. His retirement came quietly after shooting the short film The West Side Waltz in 2002.
He never walked a red carpet.
Sullivan trained at the Main State Music Theatre and kept that theatrical discipline until the end of his days. He never let the Hollywood spotlight seduce him and preferred to keep his home on the East Coast. His filmography includes more than fifty titles that defined an era of American cinema where realism mattered more than digital spectacle.
But time spares no one, not even the toughest. Brad Sullivan died on December 31, 2008 at a Manhattan residence from liver cancer. He was 77 years old.
