Jon Seda wasn't thinking about the spotlight while taking punches in a ring in New Jersey.
He was an amateur boxer with a record of 21 wins and one loss, aiming for the Golden Gloves. But fate has strange ways of changing an athlete's plans. In 1992, he auditioned for Zebrahead without ever having set foot in an acting school.
Film was an accident.
He landed the role because his face matched what director Anthony Drazan was looking for. That decision derailed his boxing ambitions and forced him to learn the craft on the fly. The truth is, his natural charisma more than made up for his lack of formal training during those early years in New York.
In 1997, he filmed Selena alongside Jennifer Lopez. He played Chris Pérez and had to learn to convincingly fake playing the guitar. The film earned 35 million dollars in the United States alone and gave him a level of visibility that boxing never could have.
Seda quickly specialized in characters with a badge or military uniform. In the series Homicide: Life on the Street, he began refining that tough but vulnerable image that would later pay off so well. But it was in 2010 that he reached a different level of physical and emotional demands.
He played Sergeant John Basilone in the miniseries The Pacific. HBO invested 200 million dollars in the production, and the actor spent months training at real military camps to keep up with the pace of filming in Australia. For Seda, authenticity comes before personal showmanship.
And the gamble paid off.
His portrayal of the Guadalcanal war hero earned him unanimous praise from international critics. He wasn't chasing easy applause but conveying the exhaustion of a man broken by war. His name soon began to make waves in the most important offices of American television.
In 2012, he entered Dick Wolf's universe. His character, Antonio Dawson, moved from Chicago Fire to Chicago P.D. as one of the pillars of the original cast. He appeared in more than 150 episodes of the franchise before leaving the project in 2019 for strictly creative reasons.
It was a clean exit.
Seda was quick to find a new professional home. In 2021, he joined La Brea to play Dr. Sam Velez. The NBC sci-fi series required him to relocate to Melbourne again to recreate a prehistoric Los Angeles full of digital effects and green screens.
Filming for the final season of La Brea wrapped in 2024. Seda has kept a permanent home in Chicago for years and manages his career with a discretion that is rare in the industry. The actor remains involved with the foundation he created after losing his mother in 2002 to raise funds against cancer. His contract with NBC officially ended after the series aired its final episode that February.
