Kaitlyn Dever didn't need a big leading role for the industry to take notice. In 2011, she appeared on the series Justified at just fifteen and stole scenes from veteran actors with a calm that didn't match her age. Her character was Loretta McCready, a teenager caught up in the drug trade in Kentucky who handled a rifle as casually as others carry a school backpack.
That same year, she began working on the sitcom Last Man Standing. She played Eve Baxter for nine seasons and logged long hours on set in a format that often wears down young actors. But she used the production's breaks to look for projects that would take her away from laugh tracks and family-friendly scripts on network television.
In 2013, she appeared in Short Term 12. She shared the screen with Brie Larson and Rami Malek in an independent film that became a talent incubator for Hollywood. Her performance as a mistreated young woman who self-harms was the first serious sign that her range went far beyond commercial television.
And the warning came true.
In 2019, Dever's career took a rapid technical leap that few actors manage to sustain. She starred in Booksmart, a comedy directed by Olivia Wilde that grossed 25 million dollars at the box office and instantly became a cult hit. The chemistry with her co-star drove a story that updated the high school movie genre from an honest, female perspective.
A few months later, she shifted tone dramatically with the miniseries Unbelievable. Based on true events, the plot followed a young woman accused of lying about a rape. International critics praised her ability to convey trauma through silence and physical restraint. For this role, she earned her first Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film category.
The industry realized her face worked just as well in sharp comedy as in the rawest drama.
In 2021, she returned to American tragedy with Dopesick. She played Betsy Mallum, a coal miner who becomes addicted to opioids after a workplace accident. The role demanded a physical and emotional transformation that earned her an Emmy Award nomination. The series focused on the responsibility of pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. public health crisis.
In 2023, she starred in No One Will Save You. It's a science fiction film in which Dever barely speaks a line of dialogue throughout. The weight of the story rested entirely on her body language and her ability to react to computer-generated elements. It was an acting feat of endurance that critics compared to the great performances of silent cinema.
The gamble paid off.
In 2024, the production of the second season of The Last of Us confirmed her casting as Abby. This character is one of the most controversial and demanding in recent video game history because of her moral complexity and imposing physique. Dever's selection sparked intense debate on specialist forums over the difference in build between the actress and the character's original design.
Filming in Vancouver in 2024 required the actress to follow an intensive strength training regimen to build muscle mass. The production company's confidentiality agreements kept official set images from leaking during the first months of filming. The series scheduled its premiere for 2025, under the supervision of Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.
In 2024, she also appeared in the film The Last Showgirl, directed by Gia Coppola. The cast included Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis in a story about the decline of Las Vegas showgirls. The film's budget stayed below 10 million dollars and sought a run at international festivals before its commercial release.
