The Guy Who Didn't Fit the Mold

Josh Gad arrived in New York with a look that didn't appeal to casting directors looking for leading men. But he had a voice that cut through the air and a sense of comic timing he learned at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon.

In 2011, everything changed thanks to a fictional religion. His role as Elder Cunningham in the musical The Book of Mormon earned him a Tony nomination and put him on the radar of major animation studios.

It was a risky bet.

Because before that, he had only picked up supporting roles in series nobody remembers. But that success on the Broadway stage convinced Disney that this short, loud guy was exactly what they were looking for in 2013.

The Business of Being a Snowman

Gad's voice in Frozen generated billions of dollars in merchandise. He brought Olaf to life and made a supporting character outshine the leads in toy stores around the world.

In 2017 he repeated the trick with the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. He played LeFou, and the studio grossed 1,263 million dollars at the global box office.

Then doubts about his typecasting set in.

The actor tried to break the mold with Murder on the Orient Express in 2017 under the direction of Kenneth Branagh. But audiences still saw him as the comic relief, even when he was wearing period costumes and hiding dark secrets.

Producers, Pandemics and Spaceships

During 2020 he launched Reunited Apart on YouTube. It was a series of virtual reunions with casts of classic movies that helped raise funds during the global health crisis.

In 2022 he starred in the series Wolf Like Me alongside Isla Fisher. Here he explored a far darker, more restrained register, where the humor came from trauma rather than physical exaggeration.

His contracts diversified.

In June 2024, his casting as lead and producer in the sequel to Spaceballs for Amazon MGM Studios was confirmed. The script is by Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, under the supervision of veteran Mel Brooks.

Production of the HBO series Avenue 5 ended after two seasons and a difficult shoot marked by logistical delays at the London studios.
