The Farm Boy Who Didn't Want to Be a Farmer

Jonathan Groff grew up among horses and sheep in rural Pennsylvania. His father sold horses and his mother was a gym teacher. There was no trace of artistic tradition in his family, but the young man decided his place was in New York.

In 2006, he landed the lead role in the musical Spring Awakening. That alternative rock production broke the conservative mold of Broadway. Groff played a tormented teenager in nineteenth-century Germany, and the performance earned him his first Tony nomination at just twenty-one years old.

And the gamble paid off.

During that time, he forged a close friendship with Lea Michele that would last for decades. Together, they became the faces of a generation of performers who blended classic theater with pop culture. But Groff didn't want to stay confined to the Manhattan stages forever.

In 2010, he joined the cast of the series Glee to play Jesse St. James. He was an arrogant, competitive character that allowed him to show a more cynical side to millions of viewers. That massive exposure opened the doors of the entertainment industry to him for good.

The Silence of David Fincher

Many musical theater actors struggle to tone down the intensity of their gestures in front of the camera. Groff broke that barrier when David Fincher cast him in 2017 to star in Mindhunter. In this Netflix series, he played Holden Ford, an FBI agent obsessed with criminal psychology.

It was his first major reality check.

Fincher is known for demanding dozens of takes for a single scene lasting just a few seconds. Groff had to learn to hold back his energy and use silence as a storytelling tool. The series became a cult favorite thanks to its cold atmosphere and deliberate pace.

In 2013, he voiced Kristoff in Disney's Frozen. The project grossed more than $1,200 million worldwide. Despite being a Broadway star, he didn't get a song of his own in the first film (a technical detail that was corrected in the 2019 sequel).

But his return to the stage was always a top priority on his schedule. In 2015, he accepted the role of King George III in the musical Hamilton. He appeared on stage for only nine minutes, but his caricatured performance and his way of spitting out words earned him another Tony nomination.

A Full Circle on Broadway

Groff has always managed his career with a discretion that is rare in Hollywood. He never hid his homosexuality and became a natural role model without the need for big statements or marketing campaigns. He simply let his work speak for itself in every project.

In 2021, he took part in The Matrix Resurrections, taking on the challenge of playing a new version of Agent Smith. The shoot was physically demanding and required months of martial arts training. The film received mixed reviews, but his presence brought renewed energy to the Wachowski sisters' franchise.

The circle was closed for good.

In 2023, he returned to the stage in the revival of Merrily We Roll Along alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez. Stephen Sondheim's play tells the story of three friends in reverse chronological order. It was a critical success that sold out every performance during its run at the Hudson Theatre.

In June 2024, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his role as Franklin Shepard, after eighteen years of professional work in the entertainment industry.
