In 1996, the Nederlander Theatre in New York had no idea it was about to witness a changing of the guard in musical theater. Idina Menzel took the stage to play Maureen Johnson in Rent with an energy that had little to do with the classic training of the divas of the era. She was 25 years old and had toughened up singing at weddings and bar mitzvahs all over Long Island.
That debut earned her first Tony nomination, but it didn't guarantee her a bed of roses in the industry. Menzel represented a type of performer who didn't ask permission to belt her highest notes. But success in theater is a coin toss that sometimes takes far too long to land heads up.
And that was only the beginning.
After a brief stint in pop music with an album that went largely unnoticed in 1998, the actress realized her place was on stage. The record industry tried to mold her into a radio-friendly solo artist, but her voice had too much personality for the synthesizers of the late '90s. So she returned to the Off-Broadway circuit to keep refining a sound that would soon become unmistakable.
In 2003, Menzel took on a role that was physically grueling. Performing eight shows a week in green paint to play Elphaba in Wicked was hardly the ideal plan for any actress of her generation. But the story of the Wicked Witch of Oz allowed her to unleash a vocal power that broke the mold of Broadway technique up to that point.
She won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2004 and became the definitive role model for thousands of theater students around the world. The physical demands were so intense that during her second-to-last performance she fell through a trap door and fractured a rib. But her endurance was already a legend in the dressing rooms of 51 Street.
Menzel is not your typical soprano.
Her ability to hold high notes with an almost impossible chest voice caught Hollywood's attention. In 2007, she took part in Enchanted alongside Amy Adams, though curiously, she didn't sing a single note in that film. It was a production decision that many critics of the time considered an absolute waste of talent.
In 2013, the history of animation changed forever when she gave voice to Elsa in Frozen. The film's main song became a phenomenon that exceeded every commercial expectation Disney had. In 2014, she performed that song at the Oscars ceremony, where a pronunciation slip by John Travolta put her at the center of every online conversation on the planet.
But independent cinema also came knocking to pull her out of her comfort zone. In 2019, she shot Uncut Gems under the direction of the Safdie brothers, playing the wife of a gambling-addicted jeweler played by Adam Sandler. In this film, she showed a dramatic restraint that many didn't expect from a musical star used to emotional overexposure.
In 2021, she returned to family cinema in the version of Cinderella directed by Kay Cannon, playing the stepmother. For this role, Menzel insisted that the character have real depth rather than being a simple fairy-tale villain caricature. She has always preferred characters with rough edges over the flat archetypes of the Disney factory.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she premiered the musical Redwood at the La Jolla Playhouse in California, a project designed specifically for her current vocal abilities. The production moved to the Nederlander Theatre at the end of that same year, closing a circle with the same stage where it all began three decades earlier. The initial investment for this production topped 15 million dollars due to the complexity of its vertical set design.
