Ricky Whittle wanted to be a criminal defense lawyer. During his time at the University of Southampton, he balanced law books with competitive soccer and track and field. But a serious knee injury abruptly ended his Olympic aspirations and pushed him to look for income in advertising.
He started out modeling for sportswear brands. In 2002, he landed his first major role in the series Dream Team. There, he played Ryan Naysmith for five years and filmed more than seventy episodes before moving on to mainstream British television.
And the change of direction was decisive.
He joined the soap opera Hollyoaks in 2006 to play Calvin Valentine. The character stayed on air until 2011, and it gave him experience on fast-paced daily shoots. That exposure led to his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2009, where he finished in second place.
He decided to move to Los Angeles without a signed contract. In 2014, he landed a role in the cast of The 100, a science fiction production that brought him international visibility as Lincoln. His character gained weight in the storyline thanks to the chemistry Whittle had with the rest of the young cast.
The relationship with the series creator, Jason Rothenberg, became untenable during the third season. Whittle publicly claimed he suffered workplace harassment and that the producer tried to erase his work by systematically cutting lines of dialogue from the script.
In 2016, he abruptly decided to leave the project.
But the walkout didn't derail his career in the United States. A few weeks after leaving The CW, it was announced that he would star in American Gods. Neil Gaiman and Bryan Fuller personally chose him to play Shadow Moon in the adaptation of the famous novel.
Production on the series was extremely complicated due to constant changes in creative directors. The first season had an estimated budget of 30 million dollars. Whittle led the cast for three seasons until Starz canceled the show in 2021 without filming an ending for the story.
After wrapping his television work, he sought roles with more demanding physical requirements. In 2024, he took part in the war film Land of Bad alongside Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe. The shoot took place entirely in the jungles of Gold Coast, Australia.
He played Sergeant Bishop.
For this role, he underwent military training with former special forces members. Filming the jungle combat scenes took eight consecutive weeks in extreme humidity. The production used practical effects and real pyrotechnics to reduce the use of digital touch-ups in post-production.
