Spencer MacPherson didn't need a backup plan because Canada's television system absorbed him before he finished high school. He was born in Mississauga in 1997. His first steps weren't in prestigious local theaters but on the set of a franchise that functions as a factory for professionally trained actors. In 2014, he joined the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation to play Hunter Hollingsworth.
Hunter's character wasn't easy for the general public to swallow. MacPherson had to handle storylines about mental health and video game addiction with a coolness that had little to do with the usual tone of teen series. But his real breakout came when the project jumped to a global platform under the title Degrassi: Next Class between 2016 and 2017.
And he did it well.
During that period, the actor learned to work at frantic production paces. The Canadian industry shows no mercy to stagnation, and MacPherson knew he had to diversify his profile before the label of eternal student became permanent. So he looked for projects that broke away from the contemporary aesthetic of Toronto high schools.
His change of pace came with Reign in 2015. Playing King Charles IX of France meant trading hoodies for period costumes and palace intrigue. It was a smart move. In 2017, his participation in the series ended, making it clear that his face fit both historical dramas and darker genre productions.
Television is a business of endurance.
In 2018 he starred in the film Killer High. It wasn't a masterpiece of cinema, but it allowed him to explore more direct and physical horror. A year later, in 2019, he joined the cast of Northern Rescue, where he played Scout West. In this ten-episode family drama, he shared the screen with William Baldwin and proved he could carry the emotional weight of a story centered on grief and personal rebuilding.
Because the American market always keeps an eye on what happens north of its border. MacPherson kept a low profile but a steady one. In 2022, he appeared in Astrid and Lilly Save the World, playing Paris. It was a foray into supernatural comedy that helped him loosen up an acting style that until then had been strongly dramatic and dry.
MacPherson's professional maturity became evident in 2023 with two projects of different scale. First, he played Xavier Baxter in the series School Spirits. The plot, about a murder at a high school, brought him back to the school setting (this time with a paranormal twist) but from a much darker and more technical perspective. It drew a solid audience that guaranteed the show would continue for a second season.
That same year he appeared in the action film Vindicta. In this feature, he played David in a story of revenge and serial killers that aimed to exploit traditional suspense. But the actor didn't stop there. In 2023, he also joined The Girl Who Escaped: The Kara Robinson Story, a true-story project that demanded absolute restraint to avoid sensationalism.
The Canadian industry shows no mercy to stagnation.
His ability to take on back-to-back shoots without a break is his greatest asset. In 2024, his participation in the second season of The Last of Us for HBO was confirmed. This move marks his definitive entry into the big leagues of television production, with a budget exceeding ten million dollars per episode. Filming his scenes for Vindicta in British Columbia lasted just twenty days.
