Michael Green isn't a name people usually shout on the red carpet. In 2017 he wrote four of the most profitable and talked-about films of the movie season. It was a display of strength few screenwriters manage in a whole decade. He wrote Logan, Blade Runner 2049, Alien: Covenant and Murder on the Orient Express.
That massive hit was no accident of fate. Green spent years honing his craft in the writers' rooms of American television. His first professional credit came with Sex and the City in the late nineties. Then came Smallville and Everwood, where he learned to handle the rhythm of weekly storylines.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2009 he created the series Kings for NBC. It was a modern take on the biblical story of King David, set in a contemporary monarchy. Critics adored it (though audiences turned their backs on it), and the series was canceled after just one season. That experience taught him that creative risk is often a lonely road in commercial television.
Failure is also part of learning.
In 2011 he contributed to the screenplay of Green Lantern. The film was a critical and commercial disaster that nearly derailed his career at the major Hollywood studios. Green learned then that a famous intellectual property doesn't guarantee a good result if the tone isn't right.
But he knew how to wait for his moment with patience. In 2017 his work on Logan earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. It was the first time a superhero film broke into that category at the Academy Awards. He humanized a violent mutant through a twilight western structure that nobody expected.
Because Green's secret lies in observing broken characters.
In 2017 he also took on the challenge of continuing Ridley Scott's legacy. He wrote Blade Runner 2049 with Hampton Fancher and earned unanimous praise for respecting the philosophical essence of the original film. It wasn't a box office blockbuster, but it quickly became a cult title for science fiction fans.
The professional partnership with Kenneth Branagh has been one of the pillars of his maturity. Together they revived mass interest in the novels of Agatha Christie. After the release of Murder on the Orient Express came Death on the Nile in 2022 and Cacería en Venecia in 2023.
Green specializes in updating classic structures for an audience that no longer has the patience it had fifty years ago. He changed locations and altered the motivations of supporting characters so the mystery would feel fresh. His Poirot is more melancholic and less caricatured than earlier versions.
Netflix handed him the keys to his next big world.
In 2023 he premiered the animated series Blue Eye Samurai. The show won several Emmy Awards and confirmed that Green is comfortable moving between formats. In 2024 he finished the screenplay for Carry-On (a thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra), where he recaptured the tone of the 1990s action thrillers.
His most ambitious project remains the adaptation of BioShock for Netflix. Budget cuts in 2024 forced the production to scale back and become a more personal story. Filming was scheduled to begin in 2027 under the direction of Francis Lawrence. The final cost of the film is estimated at around eighty million dollars.
