Jake Weber was born in London in 1964, surrounded by an environment that bordered on criminal. His father dealt drugs on a large scale, while his mother struggled with depression that ended in tragedy when he was just a boy.
It was a wild childhood.
But Weber decided his path was on stage and crossed the pond to train in the United States. After attending Middlebury College, he graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York in 1991.
His professional debut came in 1989 with the film Born on the Fourth of July. The role was small, but it gave him an inside look at how the Hollywood machine worked, since he shared the set with Tom Cruise under Oliver Stone's direction.
In 1998, he took part in Meet Joe Black, playing an ambitious son-in-law who tries to seize control of the family business. Critics noticed him because he held his own alongside Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt in scenes of intense verbal sparring.
But mainstream recognition took time to arrive. Before that, he had to build up a string of supporting roles in films such as U-571 or The Pelican Brief, where he always delivered absolutely restrained performances.
Zack Snyder cast him in 2004 to lead the ensemble of Dawn of the Dead. He played Michael, a pragmatic survivor fleeing the hordes in a shopping mall. The film grossed more than 102 million dollars worldwide and revived the modern horror genre.
He never sought to be the star.
In 2005, he began filming Medium alongside Patricia Arquette. For seven seasons he played Joe Dubois, a husband who represented normalcy next to his wife's psychic powers. Weber earned about 100,000 dollars per episode in the show's final seasons.
He took part in Hell on Wheels in 2014 and later joined the cast of Homeland in 2017. In the latter, he played Brett O'Keefe, a media provocateur who bore a dangerous resemblance to real-life American political figures of that decade.
The industry kept knocking on his door for authoritative roles or complex father figures. In 2021, he worked under Taylor Sheridan in Those Who Wish Me Dead, sharing the screen with Angelina Jolie in an extreme physical action setting.
His most notable project in 2023 was the series The Continental, a prequel in the John Wick universe in which he played Albert Lansky. The miniseries had an estimated budget of 20 million dollars per episode.
Filming for the first season lasted six months and took place mainly in Budapest, taking advantage of the Hungarian government's tax incentives.
