The decision that changed the course of history.

In Tokyo, in December 1937, Lieutenant Commander Edwin T. Layton, the U.S. naval attaché, talks with his Japanese counterpart during a state reception. Both review the positions of the United States and Japan in the Pacific Ocean. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto approaches Layton with a warning. Yamamoto's tone is direct and makes the seriousness of his warning clear. If Japan's oil supply is threatened by the United States, Japan will take immediate action. The film, directed by Roland Emmerich, opens with that conversation, and oil becomes the center of tension between the two powers.

Trivia about Midway

To raise funding, Emmerich cut back on the planned battle sequences and turned to private individuals. He raised $76 million, to which he added another $24 million in equity, mostly from Chinese investors.

Emmerich tried to make the film at Sony Pictures in the 90s, with William Goldman interested in the project. Executives objected to the $100 million budget, and Emmerich ended up directing The Patriot.

According to USA Today, Bruno Gaido hid after shooting down the plane, fearing he would be punished for leaving his combat post. They had to search for him to bring him before Halsey.

Distributor Lionsgate spent around $40 million on the film's promotion, including posters, photos and trailers.

The Naval History and Heritage Command of the U.S. Navy took part in both writing the screenplay and producing the film.

Sam Cox, director of the Naval History and Heritage Command and a retired rear admiral, said it is the most realistic naval combat film ever made, despite some Hollywood touches.

The battle scenes were shot inside a hangar in Montreal, where a model of the USS Enterprise's flight deck was built at 80% scale; dozens of aircraft were also built to that scale.

Filming moved to the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, where the actors were able to sit inside an SBD Dauntless, a reconnaissance and dive bomber used in Midway.
