Mandy Moore recorded Candy at fifteen in a studio in Orlando. She was 1999, and the record industry urgently wanted a brunette alternative to the blonde divas dominating the sales charts. But she never fully fit that mold of precision choreography and latex.
Sold millions of copies before she was old enough to drive. That was a golden trap.
Unlike her contemporaries, Moore decided her path would not lead through stadiums. In 2002, she starred in A Walk to Remember, and audiences discovered there was an actress beneath the layers of late-nineties music production. The film cost eleven million dollars and grossed nearly fifty worldwide.
And the gamble paid off.
For nearly a decade, the industry typecast her in roles as the girl next door or the perfect daughter. She made Saved! in 2004 to break that wholesome image (a scathing satire of religious zealotry), and the result was a social critique few expected from a teen star. But the major studio system still didn't know where to place her.
She spent years taking on projects that never quite broke through at the box office. In 2010, she lent her voice to Rapunzel in Tangled, and Disney discovered a gold mine of vocal talent in her. The film earned 592 million dollars worldwide and put her name back on the desks of major producers.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
The phone stopped ringing with top-tier offers for a long time. Moore seriously considered quitting acting after shooting several TV pilots that never aired. So they turned to independent music until the script for This Is Us arrived in 2016.
She played Rebecca Pearson over six seasons, aging decades on screen with makeup prosthetics that took three hours to apply. It was her definitive validation from American critics. She earned Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for the role, though the top prize eluded her at every ceremony.
In 2022, she returned to music with the album In Real Life. It was a return to her folk roots, free from the commercial pressures of her teenage years in Florida. Moore no longer needed to prove she could sell records to teenagers.
In 2023, they joined the cast of the second season of Dr. Death to bring journalist Benita Alexander to life. Shooting in New York required a much drier dramatic tone than their previous work at NBC. It was a necessary change of range to avoid professional stagnation.
In 2021, they signed an exclusive deal with 20th Television to develop their own projects through their production company Roll with the Punches. Their first major bet under this label was the series Twin Flames for Hulu. The production budget of their most recent TV contracts exceeds two million dollars per episode.
