The Boy from North London

Ed Skrein survived a stabbing at seventeen on a street in London. That incident could have ended everything but instead shaped an iron jaw and a stare that action cinema would exploit decades later. Before becoming a Marvel villain, he was a socially conscious rapper who performed in the working-class neighborhoods of Britain under the name The Dinnerlady P.I.

London doesn't give anything away.

In 2012 he made his big-screen debut in Ill Manors, directed by his friend Plan B. He had no formal training in acting, but his physical presence filled the frame effortlessly. That film about the harshness of the suburbs immediately opened the doors to international casting for him.

Leaving Westeros and the leap into the unknown

In 2013 he played Daario Naharis in the third season of Game of Thrones. It was a brief appearance that ended abruptly due to contract and internal political problems within the production. Michiel Huisman took his place in the next installment, and Skrein was left out of the biggest series of the decade.

And the gamble paid off.

Rather than mourn the loss of the role, he accepted the challenge of replacing Jason Statham in The Transporter Refueled during 2015. He trained for months to perform his own stunts and do without stunt doubles in most fight sequences. That shoot in France taught him that his place was in genre cinema, where the body is as important as the voice.

But it was in 2016 that his name was etched into collective memory when he played Ajax in Deadpool. His clash with Ryan Reynolds grossed more than $780 million worldwide. That cold villain, who cannot feel pain, allowed him to play with a restrained performance that contrasted with the protagonist's histrionics.

Ethics vs. the Industry

In 2017 he made an unusual move in mainstream film. He publicly walked away from the role of Ben Daimio in the Hellboy project after finding out that the original character in the comics was of Asian descent.

Ethics outweighed the paycheck.

His decision forced the studio to hire actor Daniel Dae Kim and set a precedent on whitewashing in Hollywood casts. Skrein preferred the respect of his peers to a seven-figure salary on a blockbuster. That gesture gave him an air of integrity that very few actors of his generation keep after going through the studio system.

In 2019 he worked under James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez on Alita: Battle Angel. He played Zapan, a cyborg bounty hunter that required a massive deployment of digital effects over his own performance. That same year he put on a pilot's uniform for Midway, where he played Dick Best during the naval battles of the Pacific in World War II.

In 2023 and 2024 he signed on with Zack Snyder for the Rebel Moon saga. He played Admiral Atticus Noble with a militaristic style and a cruelty reminiscent of the classic antagonists of European war cinema. For this role he lost weight dramatically and sat through three hours of daily makeup sessions to cover his body with fictional scars.

Filming for the second part of Snyder's space epic in 2024 used large-format Panavision cameras to capture every detail of his face during the final battle sequences. After production wrapped, he returned to his home in London, where he lives far from the spotlight of Los Angeles. In 2025, he plans to begin pre-production on an independent drama shot entirely in the United Kingdom with a budget of less than five million pounds.
