Turning Down Sold-Out Stadiums

Alfonso Herrera turned down a multimillion-dollar offer in 2023 when he refused to join RBD's reunion tour of stadiums across Latin America and the United States. For any management office in Los Angeles or Mexico City, the refusal bordered on madness. For him, it simply meant keeping a promise he had made to himself fifteen years earlier.

His film debut came in 2002 with Amar te duele, a feature directed by Fernando Sariñana in which he played Francisco, a classist. The box office responded strongly in Mexican theaters, and commercial television quickly absorbed his profile.

Then came the youth phenomenon of Rebelde between 2004 and 2006. That mass-market product filled colossal venues such as Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã and sold more than fifteen million records around the planet.

But the role of a teen idol was suffocating him.

The leap into English-language work

In 2008 the band played its final concert in Madrid, and Herrera announced his retirement from the stage. Several television executives predicted a swift fall into obscurity. The actor cut every tie with the pop industry and holed up in alternative rehearsal spaces.

Herrera understood early on that fast fame erodes acting discipline. He frequented stage productions by Martin McDonagh and independent theater before trying his luck outside Mexico.

In 2015 the Wachowski sisters cast him to play Hernando in the series Sense8. His character sidestepped the macho archetypes typical of Latin American fiction through a complex, carefully measured intimate relationship.

And the gamble paid off perfectly.

The following year he took on the role of Father Tomas Ortega in the television adaptation of The Exorcist for the Fox network. It was rare to see an actor trained in Mexico headlining a major American horror franchise in prime time. As a result, international offers began to pile up without relying on commercial nostalgia.

Political Edge and the Awards Circuit

He formed a long-running partnership with director Luis Estrada, which began in 2014 with La dictadura perfecta and continued in 2023 with the biting satire ¡Que viva México!. Estrada runs grueling shoots in which actors must deliver very long dialogues with merciless irony.

In 2020 David Pablos offered him the lead role in El baile de los 41. Herrera played Ignacio de la Torre y Mier, the son-in-law of dictator Porfirio Díaz, who is forced to lead a double life in the high society of the early twentieth century.

That work earned him the Ariel Award for Best Actor in 2021, presented by the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences.

In 2022 he joined Ozark in its final episodes as Javi Elizonndro, a Chicago-educated drug trafficker who hastened the outcome of the criminal storyline on Netflix.

In 2024 he shot the film adaptation of Tesis sobre una domesticación in Argentina alongside Camila Sosa Villada, directed by Javier Van de Couter.

Nobody handed him anything on set.

In 2025 he completed filming on Las muertas, a six-part series directed by Estrada about the crimes of the Poquianchis. The production employed more than two hundred extras per day over seven straight months in San Luis Potosí and Guanajuato.
