The deal with Luis Estrada

Damián Alcázar holds the all-time record at the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. It's not an empty statistic. He has won eight Ariel Awards and has worked in more than sixty films without ever going through the hoops of the major commercial TV networks early in his career. His training at the National Institute of Fine Arts gave him the technical foundation to move from street theater to the big screen without losing his naturalness.

In 1999 he starred in La ley de Herodes, and Spanish-language political cinema took a new turn. He played Juan Vargas, a humble dump supervisor who ends up becoming a tyrant, and made audiences empathize with a corrupt man. It marked the start of a collaboration with director Luis Estrada that lasted for decades.

The audience bought it all.

That film faced government censorship attempts, but Alcázar held firm in his interviews. He wasn't chasing quick fame. He preferred celebrity roles with heavy social weight and scripts that said something about the country's reality. For him, acting has always been a tool for analysis, not just entertainment.

In 2004 he shot Crónicas under the direction of Sebastián Cordero. In this film he played a man accused of atrocious crimes and showed he could carry tension without relying on big gestures. His name began to resonate strongly at top-tier international festivals.

Exporting talent

Hollywood's call didn't dazzle him. In 2008 he accepted the role of Lord Sopespian in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. It was a strategic move to gain global visibility without abandoning his roots. Still, Alcázar always returned to independent projects, where the weight of history rested on his shoulders.

There was no turning back.

While filming El Infierno in 2010, the actor spent weeks enduring the extreme desert heat to bring Benny García to life. The film is one of the rawest satires of the drug trade and earned him further recognition from international critics. His ability to move from dark comedy to pure drama within a single scene is his greatest asset.

In 2017, he joined the cast of Narcos to play Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela. His presence in the third season of the Netflix production gave him a massive platform across Europe and Asia. But before accepting the contract, he insisted that the character not be a caricature of the typical criminal.

Politics always comes back.

In 2023 he appeared in the superhero film Blue Beetle, playing Alberto Reyes. It was his first foray into big-budget cinema from DC Studios. Despite the scale of the production, Alcázar focused on bringing humanity to a character who embodied the values of an immigrant family in the United States.

In 2023, he also premiered ¡Que viva México!, closing another chapter of sharp social criticism alongside his usual film crew. The movie ran for 191 minutes and was widely distributed after a long dispute over theatrical exhibition rights versus streaming.

In 2021 he starred in the series El asesino del olvido, playing a man with early-onset Alzheimer's who decides to seek justice on his own. For this role, he worked with medical advisors to accurately recreate the disease's tics and loss of visual focus.

The production of Blue Beetle in 2023 put more than $100 million into visual effects and post-production.
