Manuel Garcia-Rulfo isn't your typical product of a city acting school. He grew up among horses on a ranch in Jalisco, and his first encounter with the camera came through his grandfather's eyes. That man shot small family stories on 16 millimeter film, and Manuel simply watched.
At first, he wanted to be behind the camera. He studied communications in Mexico, but his curiosity led him to New York to try his luck at the New York Film Academy. There he discovered that acting was his calling, since he had a physical presence the camera loved.
He moved to the United States without fluent English.
In 2009, he made his Mexican film debut in La última y nos vamos. It was a modest start, but enough to show that his look and screen presence worked on camera. The real break came when Antoine Fuqua cast him in the new Magnificent Seven.
Shooting The Magnificent Seven in 2016 meant working alongside names like Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt. Garcia-Rulfo played Vázquez and had to spend months training with weapons to make his character believable. He didn't want to be the stereotypical Latino supporting actor who only delivers three filler lines.
And the gamble paid off.
After that, his face became a regular presence in major studio productions. He appeared in Murder on the Orient Express in 2017 and in the sequel to Sicario in 2018. He was working constantly, but he still lacked the breakout name that would set him apart from the ensemble casts.
In 2019, he took on Michael Bay's direction in 6 Underground. It was a frenetic production where the Mexican actor showed he could keep up with the pace of the most demanding shoots in the American industry. But the real change of scale would come with a streaming platform.
Many thought that replacing Matthew McConaughey's charisma in the role of Mickey Haller would be professional suicide. In 2022, Netflix premiered The Lincoln Lawyer, and Garcia-Rulfo brought a different kind of vulnerability to the character. The series racked up more than 260 million viewing hours in its first weeks on air.
That success allowed him to choose projects with much more calm. In 2023, he shot A Man Called Otto alongside Tom Hanks and proved he can hold his own with the legends of the old guard. Manuel isn't chasing easy glamour but lasting presence in an industry that tends to forget quickly.
His big breakthrough into global mainstream film is scheduled for 2025.
In 2025, he stars in the latest installment of Jurassic World Rebirth, directed by Gareth Edwards. Filming took place on location in Thailand and Malta, with an estimated production budget of 200 million dollars.
