In 2006, Paramount executives put the face of a Veracruz-born actress on thousands of American billboards to serve as a calm counterpoint to the antics of Jack Black in Nacho Libre. Ana de la Reguera arrived in Hollywood after ten years working on Mexican television sets. The industry assumed that comic role would be a fleeting stroke of luck.
They got it completely wrong.
Born in Veracruz in 1977, she learned the unwritten rules of the craft early on. Her mother had won beauty pageants and worked in front of the microphone, but the young actress preferred to train in theater workshops and dance schools before signing her first professional contract.
In the mid-nineties, telenovelas ruled Mexican screens with an unforgiving aesthetic dictatorship. De la Reguera racked up roles in hits like Azul and Pueblo chico, infierno grande, but broke the mold in 1998 when she left for the independent production company Argos to shoot grittier fare like Tentaciones.
That contractual defiance angered Mexico's television elite. But it opened a direct path to the big screen just as the new wave of directors was looking for faces free of melodramatic habits.
In 2000, she starred in Por la libre under the direction of Juan Carlos de Llaca. Three years later, she blew up the local box office with Ladies’ Night, a commercial comedy that drew more than two million viewers to theaters across Mexico.
Then came the call from Carlos Carrera to star in Backyard: El traspatio in 2009. That raw drama about the femicides in Ciudad Juárez earned her the top honors from national critics and put to rest any doubts about the lightness of her filmography.
Packing her bags for California meant starting the game from scratch. At Los Angeles auditions, producers immediately typecast her as the attractive neighbor or the sidekick in action films.
No one handed him a single foot of film.
So she alternated supporting roles in big-budget productions like Cowboys & Aliens in 2011 and Cop Out in 2010 with appearances in prestige series such as Twin Peaks: The Return by David Lynch in 2017 and Goliath between 2018 and 2021. Surviving in the American industry meant staying employed without burning your name on throwaway projects.
In 2021, that perseverance paid off twice over with The Forever Purge and Army of the Dead, two large-scale productions that earned tens of millions at the box office and topped digital charts for weeks.
Tired of waiting for offers that would challenge the cliché of the Latina in distress, she decided to write her own material. She spent nearly a decade shaping Ana, a foul-mouthed comedy released in 2020 that blew up her public image through autofiction, gross-out humor, and a fierce mockery of the obsession with eternal youth.
The series ran for three seasons until 2023. During filming of the second season, she took over directing duties when the original director went on medical leave, making her definitive leap behind the camera.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, she joined the ensemble cast of Luis Estrada's satire ¡Que viva México!. Soon after, she made the move into film directing with the comedy Un hombre por semana, co-directed with Marco Polo Constandse, a project shot in Mexico City that hit commercial theaters on January 8, 2026 with three hundred prints distributed to cinemas across the country.
