Anastasia Griffith was born in Paris, but her acting instincts were forged in the classrooms of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. She's not the typical actress who lands on a set by accident. Her academic training let her move from the London theater stage to American television without any sign of effort in her accent.
London felt small to her very soon.
Although she is the sister of fellow actor Jamie Bamber, she chose to build her own path from scratch. In 2004, she made her big-screen debut in a minor role in Alfie alongside Jude Law. It was a modest start that barely hinted at the command she would show years later in productions with far more dramatic weight.
And the gamble paid off.
But the real turning point in her career came in 2007. Griffith landed the role of Katie Connor in the series Damages, where she shared scenes with an imposing Glenn Close. That legal thriller demanded not only memorizing complex lines but also holding her own opposite one of Hollywood's living legends.
On that show, she appeared in 22 episodes, which served as her breakthrough platform in the North American market. Critics noticed her ability to convey vulnerability and suspicion at the same time.
But her career didn't stop in New York courtrooms.
Shortly after, she joined the cast of The Unit in 2009 to play Elizabeth Williams. This shift toward action and military drama proved that her London training could serve her in any context. At this point in her professional life, she was no longer just somebody's sister but a face the general public on CBS could recognize.
The entertainment industry often pigeonholes foreign actresses, but Griffith skillfully avoided that trap. In 2011, she dove into fantasy with Once Upon a Time, bringing to life the duality between Kathryn Nolan and Abigail. It was a smart move to enter the living rooms of millions of families through a much more commercial and lighthearted story.
In 2018, she returned to darker territory with the espionage series Deep State. She played Amanda Jones in a plot that explored the dirty side of financial and government power. At this stage, her style became drier and more direct (less artifice, more physical presence).
Because the British market always comes knocking again.
She appeared in The Blacklist for 2018 as agent Lena Mercer. Her ability to move in and out of established franchises without clashing with the tone of the production became her greatest financial asset. She wasn't chasing absolute stardom on magazine covers, but the reliability of the character actress who always has work lined up.
In 2020, she filmed the series The Wilds for Amazon Prime Video, playing Alice. Production took place mainly on location in New Zealand under strict safety protocols.
